Hey all .. !!!

So I just picked up the Squire Strat pack with the Affinity Strat® HSS with Bullet® 150 DSP Amp , a friend of a friend of mine works as a guitar repair dude, so hes actually replacing the strings and gonna do a once over on it, however, as i dont know him to well and dont wanna really bug him....

My question is what is there as far as tools to help learning .. I picked up the Fender Getting Started On Electric DVD but im also looking for maybe a chart or something to look at. Something like ..Hal Leonard Guitar Chords (Poster) or Hal Leonard Guitar Chord Diagrams ( altho while diff colors, these both appear the same to me . ) and maybe ..Hal Leonard Guitar Exercises Poster... .

I saw a computer software program that looks intresting ... eMedia Guitar Method v4.0 .. however , without seeing it im kinda iffy .. maybe some of you guys have some insight or tips?

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Zach

I would use the dvd for awhile. You have a lot to learn but it can be a fast process if you apply yourself. Hal offers a complete guitar method with 3 volumes that I found to be usefull. But you don't really need to spend more money. No amount spent will replace time on the guitar. After you are familiar with chords and stuff you will open doors to other material. The web has all sorts of material but your best with a reputable source such as the fenderplayerclub.com . Good luck.

yah i have the emedia selection, it is awesome, i have been playing for a while, i have learned that you need to take it slow, meaning dont stop playing every day, but dont think you are going to get a guitar and play entire songs in Gminor, or play black sabbath songs, learn all of the "acoustic" stuff first, meaning simple chords and notes, but remember that you dont have to be able to read music to go pro. and start out with the beginners lesson of emedia, it will get you good fast, so starting in the middle grade lessons is a terrible idea

Get the posters if you can and hang them up and practice them along with some lessons as recommended by the prior posts. Once you have some basics under your belt then check out the Learn How To...Andy Aledort DVD's at Publix or whatever store sells magazines. They usually repeat the magazines every couple of months and you can find some valuable info that will pave the way to learning the type of music you like and the scales you need to play with.

It's going to be a while before your ear gets trained (mine is taking 20 years) but you can pick up some riffs from Andy Aledort that will unlock those songs you are trying to figure out.

They didn't have all this in the 70's and early 80's. You had to find a teacher if you could afford it and hope you didn't get ripped off.

yeppers, take advantage of all the tutorial stuff you can get your grubby little hands on.. as a youngster, there was little or nothing with the sophistication and ease of whats available now. (nod to mustangtoo, i learned from copying riffs from LP's and the radio)
