I can speak to this... way back when I started to play I thought I wanted to play guitar. I bought a Squier Strat and loved it. I got it from small music shop for a song (I think $110) and it played great.

My Squier P-Bass Special is the same way. I think someone mentioned about the elctronics and pick-up and those will not be the same quality as a true fender, but if you are just starting out and playing through a little 15 watt amp or whatever, the Squier will serve you very well.

In High School at the talent show I played "Teen Spirit" onstage with that Squier Guitar and people really liked the look and sound of it.

But the pickups and electronics are definitely not the quality of Mexican Strat... but the price is better and from I can tell it plays as well... even if the workmanship here and there isn't quite as good.

really, really good values (especially used) for beginners.

people should stop badding on squiers. Like if they get a bad one, they automatically assume that all are bad. It's the same thing with Fenders people, except it's less common in Fenders! Sometimes you could get a bad american strat, and that's what turns a lot of people off from fender.
Squiers can be good instruments with proper setup. SOme higher end squiers could be comparable if not superior to MIMs. If you put a fender name on the squier deluxe strat or the classic vibe, it would be worth a couple times more.

If you're learning to play, a Squire will be great guitar for you. There are two problems with buying a more expensive guitar right off the bat:

1. You might not keep playing

2. Once you learn how to play, you might find out that you prefer the sound of a different style of guitar

Either way, it would be a shame to spend a bunch of money on something that doesn't get used. The most important thing is to PLAY.

Amen to that! There are tons of Squiers and Fenders on ebay, for sale because the person bought it and never was able to play for whatever reason. I am comparing the classic vibe series to the standard MIM and am leaning toward the squier. Both are very similar in specs. And the squier is $100 cheaper.

I see no reason to NOT buy a squier for a first or even second guitar. In my case it will be my third, whether I end up with a MIM or a Squier CV60s.

The Squier Deluxe is an AWESOME deal. $250 and plays every bit as good as an MIM. OR at least the one I played did.

It doesn't matter what you choose, someone is going to give you a hard time over it. Get the best you can afford, play the crap out of it and upgrade later. Or sell it if you don;t like it.

Randy's right. No matter what you buy, someone will criticize you. If you buy a Squier they'll say it's a cheap piece of junk. If you buy a Fender American Standard they'll say you got ripped off and paid for the name. And so on...

Just play!

As I posted earlier on this thread I just got the Squier Tele, and its my 4th guitar. Out of my 3 other guitars 2 are vintage and the other is a new `08 American Standard Strat. I was very impressed with the Squier Tele, for $ 170 the neck is made well and the guitar is a pleasure to play. I had a $100 Strat knock off , the frets were so bad the ends of them irritated my hands because they were not filed down right. I wound up selling it after a few weeks. But what I`m getting at is, for a guitar that appeals to the people who can`t afford to buy an expensive guitar, the Squier is a good choice.

My guitars only get played at home, thru a Pod, into headphones.

A properly set up Squier Standard series guitar can be very comparable to MIM (or Standard Series) Fenders....

As a former metal guitarist I would STRONGLY advise against buying a Fender guitar. If you are going to play something like Fall Out Boy it'll do just fine, but if you want a quality metal guitar you should stick with Dean, ESP/LTD, Ibanez, Jackson, Schecter, or even BC Rich.

It definitely comes down to personal preference, but in my opinion Fenders have a boring cliche design and sound a bit tinny.
