For $120, you can get into the Fender Mustang.
It's a 20w amp with an 8" speaker, that also includes amp modeling, as well as a headphone out and an aux input so you can play with MP3s.

It's not the best thing available, but I think it's the best thing in the sub-$200 price range. That range includes the Marshall MG series, which are not nearly as versatile as the Mustang.

Yes! I was just going to suggest the same thing!

I had one of these amps (version 1) until I "sold" (essentially gave) it to a friend's son who was just starting out. As mentioned, it's not the best amp in the world, but if you are looking for a variety of sounds to play with at low volumes (or headphones) on a budget, I don't think you can do better. I loved mine. It even has USB recording capabilities and software.

All of the Guitar Centers in the Twin Cities have the Mustang 1 V2 in stock for $120. You can try one out for yourself.

Hope you enjoy whatever you choose, but give this amp some consideration. I think you'd have fun with it!

Cheers,
Dave.

I brought the amp question up as sort of a mirror; a base to consider if upgrading the Affinity is worth it. But since it seems to have flamed a bit:

The "little mini-amps are junk" is too strict and omnicomprehensive, so I'll sorta disagree. One thing Vox knows is the typical Vox sound, and they seem to get it from every amp they make - including the Minis and headplugs.
Plus, I count that "mini amps" covers things like the Pignose, MicroCube, TVR's and so on.

On the Mustang, seems to me the smaller ones are very much go-through (buy, play some, trade for better) amps; much like the pack-Frontmans used to be. But there are a lot of options, if kate-mpls desides to get a new amp - including many computer based interface/software systems.

And re: good guitar/bad amp, bad guitar/good amp question... I agree that the sound is better on the latter, but if I'd have to choose, I'd rather play a good Strat through anything than a Lucky7 (my first guitar w-a-y back then, with over 1/6" (4 mm) action & finger-bleed-stiff) through a Vibrolux.
In a way, that repeats what I was saying above about the Affinity, too: consider trading for better instead of modding.

Bingo... The whole shebang needs an upgrade, but at this point, with a budget of only $200, I think the most bang for the buck is in the amp, and the Champ leaves 40% of the budget in the bank for the guitar replacement.

Yes, then the Mustang will be back on the list of things to upgrade....

Now, which amp do you mean, Mustang (page 1) or Champ (page 2)?
Anyways, my 'bang for the buck' option still would be trading the Affinity for a Strat model which feels just right.
But that just shows there is no one right answer.

Oops... I always get those mixed up.
"Back in my day" the Mustang was a guitar and the Champ was a decent little class-A tube amp.

We won't talk about the Bronco :D

Exactly ;)
That's what happens when you put together a student package but then don't sell it as a package.
Didn't they also have a Bronco bass to go along with the Mustang?

Update: After spending some time on the Fender Play Beginner group on facebook, I am now the proud owner of a Mustang GT40 amp (Riff City Guitars in New Hope, MN had it on sale for under my critical budget mark). And I've been having a lot of fun with the presets.

And I'm saving the guitar upgrade budget for a new guitar for my birthday, which is probably going to be a Squier VM Mustang, Fender Duo-Sonic HS or Fender MIM Strat (with the outside possibility of a Chapman ML2 Modern).

Love happy endings. Now play on, play LOUD! (Well, consider the neighbors, but you get my drift...)
