I have 2 Strats I've recently aquired, an older Affinity with a bridge that "floats" and a newer Affinity thats flush. Are the bridges supposed to be flush or float?

It is a matter of taste, Clapton use a flush tremolo

Fender built all Stratocaster guitars with floating tremolo( non flush) except non tremolo Strat.
You can drop down tremolo to use flush. You have to raise saddle to keep right action

Maybe this comes in handy: Strat Setup Guide

And simply put, a Strat trem is designed to be floating.
