Hey all,

I’m looking to make some tweaks on my recently acquired VM Mustang. I’m looking at doing some of the Cobain mods, starting with the bridge. I’m having difficulty finding clear answers regarding the bridge. I saw a bridge for a Squier J Mascis JM, which is the same style as the tune o matic style used on the Cobain Mustangs, and I know the JM has a 9.5 radius. My question is would this be an easier option than some of the others out there regarding the bridge? I’m looking to do this as easy as possible (no drilling, as little to know neck shimming as possible), as I’m new to doing these modifications (the most I’ve done is change the pick guard and tuners on my first Strat). Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The VM Mustang has a Mustang 'dynamic vibrato' type bridge, the J. Mascis Jazzmaster has (surprise!) a Jaguar/Jazzmaster type trem. The routings in the body are totally different.
So, the replacement you're thinking is by no means an easy job, even for an experieced modder.

Simply put, forget it...

The other part is the "why?" What's wrong with the bridge now?
And a BTW; shimming a neck is IMHO quite a simple procedure, if it's needed.

I do not have a Mustang, but just got a Jaguar, I saw what I expected when the bridge rattled and lower itself after only playing it for less then an hour.
I shimmed the neck and wax potted the bridge then lubed all the points of friction.
Now I have been banging the heck out of it for days with no more issues! Stays in tune, with no noise...
I am loving it, big time...
Try it. Worth the time...
