Been reading about the Squiers on here and have a couple of questions. First, what is the pecking order of Squiers, like Affinity, Bullet, Classic Vibe, etc. Also, are Chinese made ones better than Indonesia and not quite as good as the Japanese. May go to GC tomorrow and check out a butterscotch CV if they have any. Thanks for any and all input.

First of all, Squier, preferably with a ®...

Then, I could go into a long pointless rant about how the 'pecking order' and 'good if made there, bad if made there' are variating through ages, and hype, and personal, and so on.

But I'll just say that with FMIC, it's mostly WYSIWYG with the (occasional) gems and (very occasional) lemons.
To love/hate a guitar is a very personal thing, so play the instrument (note: only with proper setup) you're interested in, and take it home if you match.

"The vogue" at the moment seems to be that Classic Vibes, Vintage Modifieds and Modern Players give a good cost/profit ratio...

I have three different Vintage Modified Squiers (the ones that are pictured in my signature,) and they've pretty much done me alright, especially the Precision. I like them quite a lot, but that doesn't necessarily mean that someone else will, or as much. Generally, it does seem like they are well liked, though. At least, you don't have to spend a large amount of money to get one.

My one issue was the pickups. My Squier Standard Strat never really sounded like a Strat. Then years ago when I took it apart for the first time, I saw they had ceramic bar magnets and steel slugs rather than the rod magnet pole pieces that largely define the Fender sound. I think as long as you swap out the pickups, they're fine.

I'll respectfully disagree on that. The sound of a pickup (let alone a guitar) is not defined by the magnet type alone.
Ceramics in plenty of MIMs & MIJ's sound absolutely great.
Or SD's Little '59.
Jeff Beck & hot noiselesses.
And so on.

I have nothing against ceramics in principal. I have guitars with Hot Rails, Super Distortions and repros of Univox humbuckers. I just don't think my Strat sounded like a Strat until I replaced two of the pickups with SD Vintage Staggers.
