i think its time squier begins making tube amps.
i would love to have a cheaper version on a deluxe reverb or something. Maybe even some original designs, but lets keep them with out a drive channel. (lol) any thoughts?

I'm only a beginner but I recently purchased an inexpensive tube amp from Behringer, the Vintager AC108. It was only 80 bucks (had I searched the web like I usually do I could've gotten it for 65). Price was an issue, I wasn't going to spend 200 plus to get VCXD or a Valve Junior or a Champion 600. If Squier had a tube amp that was like a hundred bucks I would've gotten it on their name alone. If Squier decided to make a tube amp I would suggest the following.... 15 watts or less, at least bass and treble and a headphone output. Oh yeah.... in a combo form.

Fender already has the Champ tube amp reissues which in my humble opinion don't sound like much and are very small. Probably by changing the speaker and messing with the wiring you can make it sound better like has been done with the Valve Junior on a lot of web sites.

Gomania16: you probably did good getting the Behringer and at that price. You have to calculate shipping off the net.

Nothing is going to sound like a Deville or a Mesa and their prohibitive prices.

Well I have some good news. The store I ordered my amp from, Samedaymusic.com, has a price protection policy that lasts 60 days. I sent an e-mail and I'm sure they'll give me 15 bucks back. Wow, so cool.
It's important to get the best price possible.

Way to go Gomania16! I have a friend that lives by the creed "Never pay full price". Smartest person I know.

Anyway, how does the amp sound compared to a Valve Junior? I'm going to check it out on the net.

I've been wanting to trade my Crate in for a mid size tube amp but I was waiting on a used Hot Rod Deville until it fell through. The Crate just growls with it's tiny speaker so I never play it and probably won't play the tube much but it would sure be nice to light it up every now and then.

i would bet the champion 600 would sound amazing if it wasnt for that 6 inch speaker. i wish it came in head form, i would just build a 1 or 2 12 cab for it

You mean like the Chinese-made Epiphone amps?

Yes!

That would be great to have $100, made in China, Squier tube amp combos/heads, etc.

It has an external speaker jack in the back above the speaker next to the power cord per the manual.

I think it is too tiny to make a head out of it unless they add more tubes. You can always take the parts out and make a new cab for it.

I wouldn't mind having one on my desk just to plug into with a better speaker. Only thing is you can't see the tubes light up so I think a new cab would definately be in order. Maybe with a Squier emblem.

Also a price drop would help. I think they go for $200 around Miami.

Mustangtoo.... You asked how my AC108 sounds and I can't give a fair comparison because I lack experience. I happen to like it but it does buzz, more than a bit. The literature claims there is a 12AX7 tube but I can't see it. On the back of the amp it says in a caution label "..... no user serviceable parts inside." I'm not sure if the "Ultra Tube Circuitry" is an emulator or an actual tube. Aside from the buzz ... I like it alot. My other amp is a Squier SP-10 and it is not responsive in the EQ department like the AC108. The bass really comes out I think (I could feel it) but I guess that all tube amps are like that. Overall I'm very happy because of the far improvement in bass and treble over my SP-10. I still like my SP-10 so I don't think that I'll be so quick to get rid of it. It does sound better than my SP-10 but you should ask real "players" that can crank through a song to get a good evaluation. I do like the overdrive provided by cranking the preamp gain up all the way.

Gomania,
i used the first edition marshall valvestates for awhile, the 8040 and the 8280. Both of them were hybrid amps with a 12ax7/ecc83 valve fitted into the pre-amp, and both had the "no user servicable parts" sticker on em. If your berhinger is advertized as a hybrid it will be a hybrid. Amp snobs always slate hybrid amps, but in my varied musical carreer i've used a good few of em, particularly for gigs. They sound way better than solid state and are 100 times more reliable than valve amps. O.k changing the tube in em for another rating e.g ecc81 or 82 doesnt affect the tone like it does with an all valve amp, on the other hand they dont eat the valves like traditional valve amps do.

A chinese squire amp would be a superb idea. The chinese quality control issues are a thing of the past when the parent company oversee's it right. Look at the chinese vox ac30's, their great amps, they certainly dont have the reliability issues that have plagued vox in the past.

Thanks Gomania16, I couldn't see the tubes in the Champ either and most times they are covered with a metal shield anyway. The buzz might be either the power supply AC current or you pickups. Try switching to the bridge and mid pickup setting or middle and neck to get the humbucker going. I read that it also helps to put aluminum foil inside the pickup cavity of the guitar if you ever open it up. There are effects pedals that can help with this kind of stuff but they can be very expensive.

Example: I use the DOD Supra Distortion to stop my Crate from growling at me. It compresses and gives a creamy distortion which knocks out the low grunge growling sound you get from a small speaker.

But I think a multi effects pedal would work a lot better plus most of them can be hooked up directly to your computer to download your favorite artists tone.

Keep on playing those riffs and soon you will be jamming like a pro!

One tube amp that I heard a review on www.guitarplayer.com was the AXL Akita Series. Very nice looking. Great sound as well. And reasonably priced. Sounded much better than the Peavey Valve Kings IMO.

So what do you think of the Champ XD? I'm thinking of doing a trade in on one (if they knock off $100). I don't know which one to get Super (15W)or Vibro(5W). GC has the Super in stock and the Vibro costs the same when ordered ($299). I have to try it out anyway but if it is better than the Epiphone I might go for it.
