Hi. First-timer here. A couple of weeks ago, my boss gave me (probably as a joke) a Squier Mini-Strat. (The pink Hello Kitty™ model. Go figure. :) ) Having never owned a mini guitar before, a question occurred to me: If you use really light strings (say, Ernie Ball Extra Slinkys, for instance), can you tune it above the traditional E to E setting? And if so, how high? (Incidentally, I've been playing guitar for almost 49 years, and currently own 11 (the Hello Kitty included), as well as a Fender Mandolin.) Thanks!

I have no idea, but why not just try it and see? What's the worst that could happen? I think that the longer the scale of the instrument, the higher the string tension needs to be to achieve a given pitch. Since that's a mini guitar, I would think you're probably already at a lower tension for standard concert pitch.

Hope this doesn't come too late when Kitty's neck is bowed beyond repair...

But seriously, first the caution: Squier Minis wer not designed for being tuned up, so unwanted results can occur.

If you proceed with this, check the standard string set (the factory stock is .009-.042) tension for standard tuning and 22.75" scale length.
Then compare a lighter set (.008 or even .007) tuned higher, a half set at a time.
A nice tool for those is this: http://stringtensionpro.com

Adjust the truss rod before you increase string tension, but don't overdo that. Snapped rods are rare but not unknown.

I'd say you're OK if the tension increase is under 20%, but that's just a vague guess.

And I'd also like to read about the results.
