My Korean Squier is the black one on the left in these photos. It is a 1993 and says FENDER on the headstock followed by "Squier Series" under the 1st string tuner on the end of the headstock. (The red Squier is a '98 Made in Mexico.) Both of these Squiers are very fine guitars and both compare favorably with my two MIM Fender Standard Strats.

Hey All,
I have come to own a Korean Strat, looks to be a 1996 model (has the 50 years of excellence sticker) and I read here they are the bomb. Its deep blue, with a couple knocks but generally not played for a good while, so nowhere near worn out. I am looking to offload this fine beast but am at a loss as to where I can go to a) sell to someone who would appreciate its pedigree and b) get me value for money.
Online auctions have them in mint condition ranging from 120-250 GBP. this one having the odd bump is maybe 90% mint...
Can anyone help me find somewhere/someone I can part with this guitar to?

Oh, and I'm UK based.

I think that the Squier Strats should be kept by original owners; we are offered less for them than we paid, due to market demand perhaps? Mine was made in 1992 and is great sounding. Your right about those skinny necks. They're good.

So what if GC thinks its worth 50 dollars? You can always say No and walk away. We know better. Lets face it, having the Fender logo on there is a personal preference. The word "Squier" was so small I eventually wore it off the headstock and never looked back.

Hi, sorry to bump such an old thread... just looking for some help regarding a Squier Strat I was given last year.

The headstock says it is Korean made but the serial number reads:

M2754509

I've looked all over the place online for date information etc. and have found nothing.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Tim.

If I were you, I'd post this same thread over at the Squier-Talk Forum or the Squier room in the Strat-Talk forum. Those forums are alot more active and there might be some guys who have more info there.

I have two MIK Squier II's. One is black and the other is red. they both have the plywood bodies and their is no pickguard, and the tone and volume knobs are aligned differently than a standard strat.

I bought the first one, black, because the neck is so, so, so sweet in it fit and finish. It does however have these tiny frets and I wish it had medium jumbos. I bought if it for the neck. Its a sweeter neck even than my MIA.
I was going to trash the plywood body until I played it. It's not a bad guitar at all. I just put standard fender tuners on it and put a GFS steel trem block and steel bridge on it to replace the crappy potmetal one that it came with. I screwed down the claw screws to eliminate the trem action and put 5 springs across.

I set the strings level and use it for slide playing. It has this uncanny growel with a glass slide that cannot be beat.

The red on came later, and again, has a extra sweet neck. It is in pieces now, as I am not a fan of the color red and I plan to sand this one down to bare wood an come back with emerald green metalic with black pickups and knobs.

I read somewhere that the plywood is alderwood ply. It must have been a clever way of using some scrap alder. I do not know if this is true however.

I love them.

Hey rockafella, do you have any pictures of your strat you could post? i have a korean strat hss with "e" prefix serial numbers. its a hss and, floyd trem and, no pickguard and, the input jack is on bottom/side of the body. i bought it from a friend and, had to take apart and go thru everything now, it plays/sounds excellent and, like you..i cannot seem to find any info on it.

Going by that description, it sounds like a Squier HM. Try that in a google search and see if you find a similar looking guitar.

thanx shredd for the info but, thats not my guitar. mine says squier stratocaster on the headstock and has tiny fender logo under the word stratocaster. it is black body w/rosewood fretboard. has floyd locking trem on it..(locking nut on it) seymour duncan humbucker in bridge position but, not original pickup and 2 single coils in mid and neck positions. has 3 knobs..1 volume 2 tone..no pickguard on it and, electronics are accesibale thru cover on back of body. the input jack is on bottom/side of body the body is typical stratocaster shape. and, there is a trem/spring cover on back. standard fender/ping tuners on it i believe too....the guy i bought it from said it was made in mid-late 80s. i like the neck on this one so much that i play it more than my american deluxe which is a beautiful playing guitar too but the frets on the squier seem a bit fatter i can get notes up in the dusty area better than i can on my american.

I bought a Squier II in 1990. It was Korean (Samick) and had a maple neck. Recently got rid of everything but the neck and the electronics. Also had a Squier (made in Korea) strat of the same year. Here is what I can tell based on all the squiers I have come across. Squier in the late 80s moved production to Korea to reduce cost and increase profit margin for entry level guitars designed to wet the appetite for Fenders. The guitars were plywood bodies but normal fender tuners, bridge, brass nut, lacquer finish necks (RW and maple) various profiles (some full some thin). Pickups were ok. Squier II came out with basically same model but cheaper hardware. The Korean (especially Samick) Squier IIs were the best mostly for the pick-ups. Cheaper tuners, cheaper bridge, and same plywood bodies. They stopped production and shortly after Squier started production in various cheaper locations (India, Indonesia, China, etc.) following the model of the Squier II but with cheaper pick-ups, rosewood necks (hardly any maple to be found). Anytime Squier has stopped production is was mostly because the product was too close to Fender to get anyone to upgrade. Korean Squiers from the late 80s have good necks and hardware. I wasnt too impressed with the pickups. Squier IIs from Korean in late 80s/90 had great pick-ups and necks but lousy hardware. If you have either or both and some spare money you could get a body of good tonewood and combine all the best elements to make a really great strat. Either way the body is going to be plywood (heavy and toneless) and the pick-usp/tone will be greatly improved with a real wood body.

BTW, Basswood is a great tonewood and shouldnt' be put in the same class as plywood. The Ibanez Satriani model uses Basswood, Jeff Beck had a strat made of basswood. Its very resonant, light and produces a bright tone. Its just brittle so not a bang around guitar.

If you have a Squier from the late 80s in Korea and want to upgrade it get a better body first.

Scott

I will be the first one to apologize for once again bumping an older thread but Im hoping someone can offer me some information on a Korean Made fender Stratocaster that I came across in a local music store.

Im assuming that the store knows what it has but I am hoping that maybe someone else could shed some light on it.

Its a black squier Strat with a serial number:

VN 500590

They are asking 99 bucks for it and im thinking that This will be a good deal to have an extra guitar you leave at my parents house instead of lugging my MIM strat every time I go.

Its definitely used but looks pretty good for its approximate age. Any other info and insight on this would be awesome.

Thanks again
