Hi all,

I recently purchased a second hand Squier Mini for my daughter! I have pulled it apart and re sprayed it!

I am wanting to upgrade the machine heads and possibly the pickups etc.

Would the machine heads and pickups from a full sized Squier be better quality or are they the same? As you are aware you can pickup whole guitars really cheap, there are also several pull offs available here in Oz that are really cheap.

I am just trying to set it up so it at least stays in tune longer than the standard gear allows!

Not sure the "standard Squier " parts will be better or fit.

Fist you have to find why guitar don't stay in tune. You said it is the machine head. What about the nut ? Neck curve are ok ?

The guitar may just need a professional set up.

Re staying in tune, I wouldn't know because I pulled it apart the day after I got it! Was just the general consensus that I have read that the tuners are a pile of junk!

I am going to change the tuners regardless as this is a cheap starting point! I am also considering a professional setup! I am also going to put heavier gauge strings on it as this seems to help the shorter guitars.

It's been 20yr since I built mine and I have been out of touch with the whole idea, even playing! My daughter has re kindled the flame so we will see where it takes us!

In my opinon any Squier tuner mini or standard are not very good like all the guitar. Where to stop mod a low budget guitar ?

You could be right but I don't know where you read these tuner are a piece of junk. Many beginner who bought this guitar may not know how to set it up properly and the only word they know are tuner.

They don't know about nut , about how to string and know nothing about a set up

Very true and agree! Hence asking the question.

It is a first guitar for her, she could use mine however she was stretching and looked very uncomfortable! I think it will be a good first guitar without spending heaps to see how she goes.

Mine which I built has never had a professional setup (maybe I don't want to know how bad it is LOL), it's pretty good, however I do miss my American strat I had in the mid 90's! Long story but whish I still had it :-(
