Tobacco burst, too. I didn't buy it new, but I did buy it in '87 or '87. The original pickups, which I still have, died, so I put in a pair of Seymour Duncan SSL-2, neck and bridge. I played without a center pickup for awhile, then put in a JB-Jr. Sounded weird, but I'm not much of a guitarist anyway. Well, I finally broke down this Xmas and got a matching rwrp SSL-2, along with a 5-way super switch and a tbx tone kit. Oh, and I found a used Crate Vintage Club 20 in really good shape.

I need help figuring out the switch and the tone control installation. I have a good 5-way in it at the moment, and could just go with a tone master scheme, but I would like to try out some other possible combinations. Suggestions are very welcome.

If i understand you correctly, you have the rare SSS/Master Tone, Master Volume/jack in the pickguard model, Strat body and Tele neck..?
In that case (well, actually this is my #1 recommendation for other guitars of the same period, too), try the original type wiring first. This would give you the chance to get to know the guitar & amp, which may prove useful with your own description - "not much of a guitarist anyway". Too many options may come in the way of playing & learning.

The superswitch is needed only if/when you need special options and the five way isn't enough; out-of-phase etc.
And if you (later) want to install the TBX, might be worth considering a booster kit, and turn the guitar into something Claptonish.

Of course, all of the above are very much my personal opinions.
