Hello, A vintage modified squier stratocaster (the yellow one) fell into my lap. I like the 2 and 4 position sounds, the quack, funk sound. I could not get this from this guitar. Took it apart and the wiring was all ok, tested the pickups by banging my pliers against the poles.

In position 1 bridge pup working, position 3 middle pup working, position 5 neck pup working....all good. Now position 2.....only bridge pup working....no middle pup at all. Position 4 only neck pup working, no middle pup at all. What is going on? These positions are supposed to be dual pups i think, not on this guitar. The rest of the guitar is excellent, the neck is so straight and fret work excellent. Can anyone see what I am missing or do all these guitars have a 5 way selector that behaves like a 3 way. No quack! unhappy duck!

Don't quite believe you there...

The most likely culprit is the selector switch, as you & st52 already diagnosed.
Do you still have the original greenish (turquoise, bluish - they come in multicolor variations...) plastic import switch, or has someone replaced it with either a 3way (wanting to go more vintage than modified) or a 5way, but wired wrong (which is an easy mistake to do, since the original is a bit different)?

At the moment Squier diagrams are lost from the Fender website. (I complain about this every chance I get. And another note: as of black Friday, the guitar section of the Squier website doesn't work; only leads to shop.fender.com; and all Squiers are missing there. Conspiracy! Foul play!)
But if you have the original import type switch, check that the wiring follows the pic link:
