I was under the impression that Abby signed all of her winds... I just bought a guitar that is spec'd with Abby Handwinds but they are not signed... ???

All the solder looks untouched...

+1

Absent such inscriptions, there is no provenance.

It IS very strange, that's why I am asking...

when did Abby leave the CS?

These are supposed to be CS '69 pickups.... the solder is untouched, the wiring is very neat... the pot codes all pre-date to the COA... everything looks in order... may pop the covers and see if there are any markings there...

Digging a little further... I guess it's not unprecedented... Abby supposedly would all the pickups for the 50th Anni Masterbuilt '54 Strats (according to the marketing literature) and did not sign any of them...

Abby did not wind the 50th anniversary mb 1954 pickups. A quote from ME on the original 50th anniversary 54' thread "She was in charge of the production of those, but she did not hand-wind them if that is what you are asking".

Initialled AY 69s are wound under her supervision.
"Abby" signed are "handwound" by her. Either special order or as supplied on specific models e.g some versions of the custom deluxe. There was a special issue box as well.
I have seen some custom shop 69 packs without the initials some time back.
I have seen her initials on some custom shop 66 time machine pickups as well.
Without her "Abby" on those it could be argued they are not handwound by her.. Maybe unmarked 69s.
Whats the strat? Vintage relic bridge?

Only in such intimate surroundings might the 'family jewels' be shared amongst friends and admirers.

As ME mentioned a few years ago, usually the PU's on these '54/ 50th Anniversary Strat were not handwound. My Masterbuilt '54/ 50th Anniversary pickups were handwound and signed by Chris Fleming.
Abby probably did some PU's and didn't sign them, but it a guitar was sold with Abby handwounds they need to be signed by her. If not signed how would one know?

56strat, have you ever compared your 54' MB with those custom wound pickups to the "off the shelf 54' MB's"? I would love to hear the difference. My 54' MB has the unlabeled pickups that most had,(although they sound great to me.

It's hard to compare. The only right way to do it would be to install the different pickups in the same guitar. However, compared to my two original '56 Strats, Fleming's pickups are the closest to vintage I've heard so far. I ordered two more Strat's and a Tele after that '54 anniv built by Chris with his handwound PU's. I like his pickups the best. I tried Rolphs, Fralin, Lollar, vZandt and a few others, the Flemings are by far my favorites. Maybe it's not fair, because Chris could try them in the guitar after he wound them and change 'em if he was not happy. He also installed that handmade cap, which makes a difference according to Chris. I am really sorry that he is not with the Custom Shop anymore.
But I played a few other '54 50th anniversary Strats and they sounded great a well.
