I'm thinking very seriously about ordering a CS Strat. I'm in suburban Boston. There used to be a few CS dealers around here, but now the CS site is telling me that the closest one is in Manhattan.

Really?

Do people outside of major urban centers just not order from the CS anymore? Do we do it over the phone with one of the favored super-dealers? How does this work now?

(And why can't I just configure the guitar I want and order it online... never mind, I know the answer to that one.)

I think their online dealer search is completely broken, and has been for years.

I live in New England too. When I search, and limit by Custom Shop, it gives me two Music and Arts stores (the tiny stores that sells cheap recorders and 1/2 size violins to six-year-olds), and Karma Music in Bolivar, Mexico. That's it.
But I'm sure Mike Lewis will jump on this and ensure it gets fixed...

What I want is pretty simple, a Postmodern NOS Strat with some easy-to-describe tweaks. I could probably order it over the phone from Wildwood or whoever. But I'd really rather deal with someone local so that I have that in-person relationship on an ongoing basis in case Issues come up, etc.

I could just order an un-tweaked Postmodern Strat from one of the online places, and it would mostly be great. But this is a guitar that I expect to be playing every day for years. I figure if I'm going to spend almost $3k on a Stratocaster, it's worth spending $3k-plus-a-little-more to get exactly what I want.

Mike, how do I do this?

           Sorry for the laughs but, at current prices, it may cost out at twice the price depending upon the overall design specs and if you specify 'Custom Shop' aka 'Teambuilt' or 'Masterbuilt' and by whom. The wait for delivery can be long. We've had some serious horror stories on this Forum in the past.I'd go with doing business with a Showcase dealer, distance nothwithstanding. If it's going to be the NY area, deal with the Music Zoo. I used to live on Long Island and have done business with them. You should check out their website and get an idea of the gear they handle. They're more of a boutique shop and lean towards personal service. You won't find a headbanger's ball going on in there on weekends. It doesn't happen. Fender used to do their NYC Road Shows from there at one time. Dealing with Guitar Center would be like buying a Lincoln at a Ford dealership. The last order I placed there in April of 2010 I cancelled because they were administratively up the old dirt trail. I gave it over to The Music Zoo. There should be an order form on the Custom Shop website which you can use to cost out a preliminary design. Then call 'The Zoo' and talk it over. Keep us posted on your progress.

Glad I could give you a laugh, but I've priced it out with a 2015 spec sheet and have at least half a clue. It would have been a team built Postmodern Strat with a few tweaks, as I said... but it's moot, because I bought one off the rack today instead. I'll play it for a few months and see how it treats me. If I like it, I'll look into ordering the tweaked version from the dealer who sold me this one.

Excellent! Off the rack is being touted as the preferred way to go these days.

Funny......Found a small luthier's shop in Tuscano, a sleepy little Italian town in olive country north of Rome.
Will share pics after I return.

Well at least you have one in the same country!
