Yes, I think a 2 years wait is way too long! Also communication with Fender was very problematic: Showcase dealer -> Fender NL -> Fender Germany -> Fender UK -> Fender CS USA -> Masterbuilder. I didn't get an order number and the proces was a big black box. It went out mr. Galuszka didn't get the right specs and built a guitar with the wrong specs. I asked explicit for communication with the builder to discuss the details before start building! He had too start all over again. :(

It takes about 1,5 years for my first contact with mr. Galuzska himself. From then it went fluently. This was a great experience. He was very kind and helpful and always answered my emails within a few minutes!!

Would I do it again? Probably not. Although I've some great ideas for a Telecater and a Stratocaster and communication with the masterbuilder was fine, next time I think I go for the team build route. Don't want to wait more than 6 - 8 months for a custom guitar.

Sorry to hear your experience was like that, it must have been stressful and frustrating. I heard of another customer having his order 'lost in the pile'. Fender stepped up pretty quick to rectify but this was after a long wait and the customer having to chase them up initially.

The RSD bridge sounds interesting from your description. Do you play your Jag much? I hope the experience didn't taint your enjoyment of the instrument?

I have not heard anything back yet- no order number; so still not even in the queue :(

Here is a lack of update report:

It's been over a month since I paid my deposit and put the order in. There's been no news back from Fender at all. I was under the impression that after a couple of weeks they send you a product code (with finalised specs) and you're on your way. The shop has said it could be a good sign in that they have not got back rejecting my request for a thicker headstock, and that it doesn't necessarily mean the guitar is not going into production with the code not coming through as yet?

The guy at the store is away till 27th July and will chase it up with Fender when he gets backs if there's still no news.

So at this stage of my order I'm floating around not knowing what is going on and whether the guitar is in the process of being built or not...

:(

I went through the same last year. The process when ordering from Europe can be quite uhm...challenging. I've ordered last july through a German dealer and after nearly 2 1/2 months, I still didn't get an order confirmation back. After voicing my frustration online one of the master builders saw my post and sent me his email for whatever questions I had and I guess he pushed some buttons because the dealer got the order confirmation a few days later. (But tough luck with 3 months delay besides the 18 - 22 months wait time on a Jason Smith masterbuilt).

I don't know if it's because of the thicker headstock that it's taking so long or it's an common problem when ordering from Europe, but I know it's really frustrating as hell, so I know how you feel.

Thanks for your reply Adam. I think you're right, it is not to do with the headstock, but just what they do. I was originally told it'd be 2 weeks to get the order confirmation. I'll wait for the guy in the store to get back at the end of the month and if the CS ignore his email or can't give a window for confirmation at least, I'll pull my order. There were plenty of other guitars in my choice list but I wanted to try the Custom Shop experience; if this is it, well...

Are you still waiting for your guitar, or has it come in yet? If so, are you pleased?

Yeah, one thing is the wait time, but when it takes so long to just get an order confirmation, then it's begins to be frustrating and annoy you. A shame really, because it seems like builders are really nice guys and very helpful, but if you never get to that point because of the "front office", well...

No, still have at least 8 months (best case scenario), so I haven't heard from Jason yet. I guess maybe around december/beginning of 2016 is when he starts building my bass. I own a couple of masterbuilts (a J, P and a Strat) and one teambuilt P (that I bought from a dealer, so not my own specs) and they're all really great instruments. So I'm not worried about the quality, I just hope we end up precisely what I had in mind because my specs are a bit crazy :)

Edit: Crazy how things turn out sometimes...a few hour after this post I've received a mail from Jason with a few questions on my order, so I guess I might get my bass this year after all :)

I hope your order comes in before Xmas. Best of luck with it.

I have decided to cancel my order. After nearly 3 months of waiting to see if my order has gone through after paying my deposit, I find out that the file was corrupted or something on the email so they've had to resubmit the order. Right back to the very beginning and the wait times extends again. No more for me.

They tell me there is only 1 guy that processes all the orders for Europe. I would have thought Fender could afford at least 2 and provide a better service than this; it's a bit of a joke.

My inheritance money shall be spent with Gibson. This has put me right off Fender.

Wow - tough luck and I totally understand why you don't wanna go through that again. The command chain/order proces is so stupid and frustrating and if they take so long to find out that your order spec file is corrupted...wow...they should at least do something, so the wait time wouldn't be 3 months longer because of the incompetence/command chain. But I know that's not the way Fender does things because one customer more or less doesn't seem to matter to them. It's a shame really, because the builders seems like really great guys, but the service level at the rest of Fender is really bad. My guess is that I would had done the same as you if the master builder hadn't seen me venting my frustration and pushed some buttons for the order confirmation to finally go through. Any special Gibsons you're thinking instead of a Jag?

And thanks - at least I know Jason is beginning my build. I think he's got a couple of weeks off now, but if I'm lucky he did manage to get the body ready for paint before that, so the drying period is while he's away. But yeah...it should be a couple of months from now + the shipping from US to Germany and then from Germany to Denmark, so I'll just have to wait and see. I don't know how long it usually takes from when the masterbuilder begins and to it's done, so I'll just have to try and be patient.

Jason has been turning out some good work the past couple of years. He seems to have refined his art. I hope the shipping stages go smoothly. It's quite an unnecessary hassle in many ways.

I'm putting more money in the fund and looking at late 50s-65 Juniors or Specials, LP or SG. I fancy something with P90s and old wood. Ideally TV yellow.

Yeah, I Think The worst part is over on My build, now I just have to wait. The service and shopping from The dealer in Germany is usually pretty smooth, so I'm not nervous about that.

Sounds cool - what's your budget ? One of The dealers here in Denmark have a vintage LP Special from 1958 with P-90 and in TV yellow if you're looking for the real deal. Though you might find cheaper options somewhere else because of the tax level here. But the dealer is trustworthy when it comes to vintage guitars.

My approx budget is £5000. I think with a sale of that kind of money I need to see and play the guitar first. I don't want to take any risks or shipping risks. I appreciate your offer though. I've been put in touch with a guy that has been selling vintage guitars for 40+ years. You make an appointment and go to his home and spend the day with him trying out vintage guitars. Now that sounds like a day I want to have! He's the type that can tell if a screw is wrong, and supplies the documents needed for insurance with the guitar. And he picks you up from the train station! What a guy.
