I wanted to create this thread to take some of the mystery out of ordering a Team Build guitar. I have used Fenders for 20 years and didn't really know regular Joes could order a personalised guitar. I thought it was reserved for the rock stars. Since researching I've seen a lot of threads about 'what limitations are there with team builds?' I haven't asked for anything out of the ordinary except a thicker headstock. I'm not sure if this is possible with a team build but I thought it worth an ask.

I phoned a guitar store (UK), who were very helpful. I emailed them a rough spec sheet, they gave a price. I finalised the spec sheet and paid a deposit. The order has gone in. They tell me Fender look it over, then send back a product code and say what they can/can't do; you OK it and you get in the queue. I was given 4-6 months waiting time.

This is a memorial guitar to remember my parents by; they were always very supportive of my playing and commented on the quirkiness of the Jags I've owned. I put in the spec sheet:

A 1962 Fiesta Red Jaguar w/ matching Headstock
65C neck shape quarter sawn
Dark slab rosewood w/ clay dots and rolled edges
Alder body selected for light weight (I have back issues)
AV65 p/ups (very impressed with my AV65's sound)
Mint green guard and standard controls hardware etc

Ref photo:

Finish:
Heavy relic
No clear coat
Standard white undercoat for Fiesta Red
Weather checking

I wanted to be as specific as possible with the relicing style and attached photos. I understand this is difficult for them. I don't expect a ding for ding copy by any means, just the general style of the wear in the photos. This included:

No arm wear
Chipping/flaking mainly around the edges
Chipping shows white undercoat
Some staining to paint from 'years of use'

Image

I added a photo of another relic's neck wear where there are no straights lines, the wear forms a V shape and is dark- very realistic looking:

I also asked for (and attached photo example):
No worn patches
Not sanded to show undercoat (I know a lot of people dig this look, but for my project I really just wanted the chipped around the edges look- as the paint is so thin).

I asked for a thicker than standard headstock for increased sustain and for an additional RSD bridge to be shipped as I'd like to have it as a swap option.

I'm interested to see how much of this is possible with a Team Build. I hope they don't see it as 'only a Team Build', this guitar is over 3 months wages for me! I'm very excited about this and will update. I'll try to add the photos I sent Fender once I master how to do it.

I think with Fender producing so many different relic designs/techniques, I found it difficult to explain how I wanted it. This for example really floats my boat, note the stained looking wood and chipping style where it almost looks as if it's flaked off from light knocks:

Image

As opposed to the 'worn through the paint' look where the arm wear rubs down the paint as in this photo:

This looks great if you want to expose some sunburst underneath, but for my project I hoped to keep the relic work to the general look of the first photo.

Whilst this is an exciting time, it's also pretty nerve wracking as with relic-work it's so easy for it to come out over-cooked.

I like the looks of the wear on both guitars in the first post. I hope that they can make it the way you want.

Personally, I'd just have the instrument built as a "closet classic" relic (minor lacquer checking, light patina on the hardware, slight discoloration of the pickguard and plastic parts) then let age and nature take its course and do the rest.

That's the beauty of special orders- we can have it built to our own personal specs. CC's may do it for you, not for me. You might like 9.5 radius, I like 7.25... The list goes on.

Yep I am much more a fan of the closet classic.
I have had a couple of this type they all had a 7.5 radius and vintage frets etc.
I suspect the guitar you want with the specifics indicated will be masterbuilt territory and will cost a fortune IMHO
Have you had any confirmation they will do a team build with this config? :D

The Masterbuilds are out of my price range- looking at £4700ish. The order has been submitted. Then Fender put together a spec sheet for confirmation and you go in the main queue- this takes a couple of weeks I'm told. I'll keep you posted.

What parts of the order make you think it will not qualify for a team build?

fatter headstock= masterbuilt, if they will even do it. Any deviation from the original design of the neck(except carve, radius and frets) or body.

Very beautiful guitar! There's a team build Fiesta Jag on the offsetguitars forum:
http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=90611

A few months ago I received my 1966 Jaguar built by mr. Galuszka after a two years wait. I ordered in 2013 and Fender told me a '1966' replica was only available as a masterbuilt (but in fact it is a 1962 with blocks and binding). At that time blocks where only available as a masterbuilt option. Also the handwired Jaguar pickups and new RSD bridge (custom made) made it a masterbuilt.

Yes it was yours and the red Jag in the thread you linked that made me put my order in! I pay you the greatest respect in waiting out 2 long years! The blocks and colour scheme you chose are a treat on the eyes. It was because of your guitar that I put the request in for the RSD bridge. That and the thicker headstock are the only 2 parts of my order that may not come under a team build. They're not necessities for me, the shop said 'put them in, they can only say no.'
(I ordered from CodaMusic, who have been great…and patient).

The RSD bridge interested me for its tonal qualities, with the brass. How does it sound? I've never had a regular Jag bridge beat me yet, close, but not yet; I believe once you master the bridge and get it to settle- you win the guitars respect.

No news on hearing back from Fender just yet.

Yes, I think a 2 years wait is way too long! Also communication with Fender was very problematic: Showcase dealer -> Fender NL -> Fender Germany -> Fender UK -> Fender CS USA -> Masterbuilder. I didn't get an order number and the proces was a big black box. It went out mr. Galuszka didn't get the right specs and built a guitar with the wrong specs. I asked explicit for communication with the builder to discuss the details before start building! He had too start all over again. :(

It takes about 1,5 years for my first contact with mr. Galuzska himself. From then it went fluently. This was a great experience. He was very kind and helpful and always answered my emails within a few minutes!!

Would I do it again? Probably not. Although I've some great ideas for a Telecater and a Stratocaster and communication with the masterbuilder was fine, next time I think I go for the team build route. Don't want to wait more than 6 - 8 months for a custom guitar.

The new RSD bridge is just perfect. I think it sounds a bit warmer and has more sustain. But don't know if it's the bridge or the guitar/pickups. My guitar has a thicker neck/peg head and slightly hotter pickups. I haven't compared it with a standard bridge yet.
