Noticed on my new '63 Relic and a few of the other guitars that the nuts are Micarta and not the period correct and generally "better" bone material... wonder why... can't be a cost thing...

The Custom Shop has been using Micarta for quite some time
http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/large/110/11071916320547d.jpg <---- example of a typical spec sheet.

There's plenty of discussion on the interwebs if you google the word, but inevitably at some point, since its not nice to kill elephants for their tusks, I do believe that it's a material that works pretty well in that application. Of course there's other alternative materials -roller nuts etc.....but real ivory and bone is frowned upon. Not quite a scientific answer.....just my observation.
cheers!!
