I'm looking to get a '63 CS Strat in the next year or so when I have enough saved, but I was wondering - how detailed have your CS orders been on guitars? I want some specific things in the wood like (1) a very tight and straight quartersawn maple neck, (2) a specific neck taper measurement, (3) a rough weight of the guitar, (4) the way the wear on the back of the neck is done (like a gradual fade instead of an abrupt "cliff" of lacquer), (5) and the screw placement. I guess these are the main things that are in the "might be asking for too much" category, since most custom builders I've worked with in various fields tend to get even BIG details wrong.

You guys think that this too much to ask of the Custom Shop? Seems like they'd be the ones, if any shop in the world since they've done crazy things like the Splatocaster, but maybe they're not into THAT level of detail. I'm sure that this would have to be masterbuilt. Nothing really extraordinary about the guitar besides the specifics of the wood.

if you look at the quote/order sheet,
you have to specify all options,

the special features you want you can add in the notes, and I'm sure the custom shop will do them if you describe it clearly enough

for this kind of stuff I assume you have to order a masterbuilt though
I think they won't do stuff like this for a teambuilt,
im not sure though

Starting out, I'm sure this attention to details is going oblige you to order a Masterbuilt guitar. You're talking about objective and subjective details. Things like finish, neck taper measurement might require that you arrange with the luthier to use Skype or Facetime, if possible. Screw placement might only require a diagram. A very tight and straight quartersawn neck demands further clarification, as I see it. Before all of this happens, there's a question posed on another thread which has yet to be answered. Are luthiers still talking to customers about their orders, or not :?: :?

That doesn't make sense to me. Verbal communication is imprecise, often ambiguous, and can easily be misremembered. Written communication gets all the details, and leaves a paper trail, which can be important for both parties in case of problems later.

Whenever I did creative work for others, I always required that any deviations being detailed in writing or drawings (whether by me or them) and signed by both parties. I avoided phone calls like the plague to avoid the whole "but I said..."

45 years ago, had I had present day technology when I sent my Stratocaster out to CBS-Fender to be refinished, I'd likely still have it instead of them swapping out the body and representing that they 'refinished' it instead of replacing it. I see video conferencing as a definite aid and supplement to what the OP is already intending to provide to the builder, particularly where the neck finish is concerned, in particularly, if he has an example to provide.
