Hello. I'm curious to have opinions on '51/'55 P bass style pickups.

Right now, I have the regular single coil in my '55 Custom Shop P. While I LOVE the tone, I would be happy to get rid of the hum. I'm curious to know how the Seymour Duncan STACKED COIL installed stock on some '55 style bass (ie the Dusty Hill signature) sounds compared to the regular single coil, and how is it wired (series, or parallel)?

Thanks for any info!
David C.

Hey Dave,

I'm not sure about the SD. (unless that's the pick up that Fender actually uses) I know there are a couple pick up manufacturers that make really nice ones. However, as far as I know the Stacked coil isn't like the old trick of having a second coil hidden in the control cavity. The ones I have seen have been more akin to an in-line split coil. Meaning they are two separate two pole pick ups wired together in series. (I think? Or maybe it's parallel :? ) While this won't have the sweetness of the real single coil Precision. From what I've seen it isn't quite as heavy handed as the Split Coil either. It's a tighter slightly more punchy version of the single coil sound. Close, but actually a little beefier in my opinion to the older American Standard Series basses with the Split Coil with the S-1 engaged. It's really a different animal and lies somewhere in between the original P tone and the split coil. Kind of cool, and definitely a good tool to have in the arsenal.

Again, I'm not sure about the SD, but here's a clip of one of the basses Fender outfitted with it recently. You can likely hear the difference just in the clip.

Hey, thanks for your reply!

I tried the Fralin split '51 style pickup, and that's not what I'm looking for. Closer to a regular split coil P, and I'm already well served in that area.

I would like the exact single coil tone, but without the hum. I'm 99.9% sure that the CS use the Duncan Stacked (2 coils one over the other) in a few of their '51/'55 style basses. I just can't find a good audio recording of the stacked coil... That pickup has 4 wires so that’s why I’m asking how Fender CS wire it when they use it… http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/c ... _coilstac/

Thanks for the video you posted, but it's clearly recorded through a mic'ed amplifier, so it's irrelevant to me (as I would like to hear it through a good DI, without any treatment).

Maybe some players have tried both pickups and could chime in there! :)

Thanks,
David C.

Okay. You might have better luck with posting this in the Precision Bass Forum or over to the SD forum as it's an aftermarket pick up and I'm sure the CS likely wired the pick up into the normal model (51 or 55) tone circuit when they used it. It's not like they'd buy a SD pick up and rewire the pick up itself. They could just build their own pick up. Anyhow, if you want a specific model wiring diagram you could probably contact Fender. If you want the pick ups wiring schematic you can just contact SD. The bassist presence on the Custom Shop forum isn't as large so those two forums and the company contacts would probably yield you more plentiful, rapid, and accurate responses to what you are looking for. Good luck!
