The same bass played by the late Who bass nut John Entwistle on the band's earliest albums!

For a start this model didn't initially appear on sale on American soil - it was a purely British phenomenon. Essentially it's an original slab body Precision from the early 50s but with the later, larger sized headstock as ordered by Arbiter in London.

Exactly what inspired the order is hard to discover but they caused interest as soon as they appeared, tickling the fancy of bassists like John Entwistle, Chip Hawkes (Tremeloes), Bob Daisley (Gary Moore, Ozzy Osbourne, Rainbow) and Eric Haydock (Hollies). Even Marc Bolan's bass player used one on Top Of The Pops in 1971 for Get It On.

It created enough interest and sales for a second batch to be made and some of these remained in the States. This is one of the most researched and coveted production Precisions ever, and it helped rekindle the interest in the original P-Bass and subsequently lead to the Telecaster Bass.

The Fender Custom Shop recently introduced their Masterbuilt '66 Slab Precision Closet Classic Bass and a book called 'Fender Bass For Britain' by Barry Matthews gives the fullest possible account of this curious instrument.

There Is another fantastic book in the topic, written by the man, that originally ordered the 1966 Hybrid as a Custom order with Fender.

This is a fantastic hardbound and squareshaped book with 253 Pages and numerous photos on the mythic 66 Fender Precision Hybrid Bass or also known as Slab.
What is the big advantage and the plus of this book compared towards other publications on the topic?
Well, the book is written by no one else than the person, that originally ordered the Hybrid Bass as special order back in 1966 with Fender.

Iron Maiden's lead bass nut Steve Harris played a heavily customized slab '66 since the early days of the band. This bass is recognizable for the West Ham stickers in the front side of the body.

Hi Jon,
yes indeed.
But already got a Problem with the bass as it seems that the tone pot is defective.
Waiting for Fender to react under Warranty.

Hi Oliver,

That sucks about the tone knob and I hope it gets sorted for you quickly and smoothly.
I tried your bass in the shop when they had it and it is awesome.

Cheers,
Jon

Thanks Jon.
No reply yet but over christmas no prob.
I have now lowered the action to my needs, Entwistle Style and the bass will go onstage with me and my WHO tribute this week Friday for the first time, besides my CS Precision 1964 Time Machine.
Cheers
Oliver

That's is very cool. Rarer than hen's teeth. They promoted them pretty well about four years ago, but that is the only one that surfaced as advertised as far as I can tell. There were a couple that had the later features. I should have ordered one - it took them 4 or 5 years to deliver.

I've come back to look at this beauty at least half a dozen times. Simply perfect. Congrats again and good luck on the issue.
