Hello All,

I've asked this on various guitar forums, but I'm feeling like I'll have better luck here.

I have what appears to be a FCS 50's reissue (v-shape neck, vintage hardware) that has a stamp of the Texas Map with the number 025 on the neck plate. Unfortunately, I don't have much documentation of this guitar, though it did come with what looks like the standard "Vintage reissue" pamphlet, and an additonal 5way pick selector switch.

The most feasible rumor I've heard was that this series was made for a dealer in Texas back in '89-'90, but I haven't been able to verify this.

The guitar shop I worked at many moons ago, had several guitars from Fender that had the Texas map outline on the neck plate. The coolest of these was a white, 3 lipstick tube repro of SRV's Charley's guitar.....it sounded great !!!!! I don't think these were built for any one dealer, but might have been done for all dealers in the Texas region.

Later, Ron H.

This is an old thread & I’m not sure if your questions are still viable, but I thought I’d add what I know.

I bought one of these last year & have been in a similar struggle to find any information anywhere about these guitars. Mine has the Texas logo on the neck plate and is #18. It was bought by the previous owner at Charlie’s guitar shop in Dallas, Texas, and that’s where my info comes from--I don't really have much documentation either. The little that I know about these things from the previous owner is that they’re not the regular mass-produced strat, and it is not just a guitar w/ Texas Special pickups. These “Texas Special” strats were a 1989 limited edition series of only 58 guitars made by the Fender Custom Shop for Diamond Dealers in Texas.
The previous owner told me that this series of Strats were made to be exact replicas of the 1956 Strat, with the same neck, classic two-tone sunburst nitro finish, pickups, etc. I have been told that they used some old parts on them, in fact. The following year, Fender made a companion series of 62 “Texas Special Telecasters,” with orange bodies and the state of Texas embossed in the pickguard, and replicating the 1956 Telecaster. From what I gather, both are very rare and collectable.

The only other information I’ve been able to find was found online at:
http://www.guitarsandeffects.com/soldgallery5.htm

A few of the details are different from what I wrote above, but I believe it to be the same series. You can scroll down to the listing of the #24 guitar they were selling & get the following info plus some pretty great pics of a really great guitar.

The listing was as follows:
Fender Custom Shop Texas Special Stratocaster #24 John Page
1990 USA model
Features
• Number 24 from a limited run of 50
• 56 Strat appearance
• 1-Piece Maple "V" Shaped Neck
• Flatter radius fretboard
• Fender Vintage Style Tuning Machines
• Factory 5-way pickup selector
• 3 Custom Shop Single-Coil Pickups
• Volume and 2 Tone knobs
• Special engraved neck plate
• 2 tone Sunburst finish
• Includes original tweed hard shell case and certificate signed by John Page
Here is an extremely cool and rare Limited Edition early Custom Shop Strat from 1990. These early CS Strats are really hot right now. This one is number 24 from a Special Run of only 50 guitars ever made. It was designed with a few special features with the Blues Player in mind. It has slightly larger frets and a flatter radius fret board, ideal for Blues style string bending. It also has a great sounding set of hot output Custom Shop pickups wired to a stock 5 way switch. This guitar plays and sounds awesome and is in really nice clean condition with just some minor clear coat wear. Includes it's original hard shell case and Custom Shop certificate signed by John Page. This is a solid investment guitar worthy of any Custom Shop Fender collection. Early Custom Shop Vince Cunetto Relics and early 80's Reissue Strats are soaring in price.

So, that’s all I got! If anyone knows anything more or has a better source of info, I’d love to hear it. Hope it helps!

Great looking guitar. I just love mine. Let me know if you got anything "official" or other documentation on these things. I'd love to check it out. I heard there's a Fender book coming out that talks about them (apparently, the first time there's anything in print) sometime soon, but haven't been seen anything yet.

Reviving this from 6 years ago, did you guys ever find any additional info on these cool strats? Do you still have them? I've been looking for one for several years, finally found one this week. It came from the original buyer who bought it new from Brook-Mays music store in Dallas.

I still don't know why these were ordered; were they celebrating Texas or a certain player? Would love to get more info, very hard to find anything beyond build details.

Does anyone know if these Texas Special strats and teles show up in the custom shop book mentioned in this thread?

Hi, I have Texas Special #10 - 1990 so interested in this thread. I was told Stevie and Jimmie
Vaughan received the first 10 of these but they didn't keep all. I bought mine from owner
of both #7 and #10 around 22 years ago.
