Mine, which is still in its original condition, has the tremolo block back at about 2mm from the body and the strings at a low action.

Mine came with 3 springs on the trem, and the trem floating. The other 2 springs are still sealed in the packet. Since I use a slightly lighter gauge of string (9.5 - 44) I have adjusted the spring tension for that, and the rear of the trem sits about 3/32 off the body! :)

Sorry Alain! The 3/32 of an inch is equal to 2.4mm in metric measurements! :)

Measured mine over the weekend.

A shade over 2.2mm - also low string action.

Hope this helps.

This all helps tremendously! Thank you gentlemen...

Oddly though, I'm wondering if all the MB's didn't just set up the guitar to their own personal prefs? I mean, if Butterscotch has 3 springs on and a floating trem, but I've got all 5 and a flat trem, then is this just a builder issue? No right, no wrong?

This seems like the start of an ME question...

Quite possibly, I was lucky enough to take mine out of the shipping box, and other than tuning it and checking it for flaw (there were none!) it hasn't changed since, except the strings of course!

I think that's the point.

Exactly! Mine is the same way! My initial question was posed because I was attempting to find if mine needed a MAJOR action adjustment/setup, as I never really have had it to a shop, and I've never even changed the strings on it yet. It's nice to know that there wasn't a "vintage-correct" setup done on these guitars, and heck, I've still got the set of Fender 1550 strings with the wound G in the box.

Very interesting!

Either/Or...

I am now relieved to know that my guitar isn't out of spec, and that the neck/bridge aren't bent 11/16ths out of position.

Worth trying. But only if you don't keep it in a safe.
I play The Shadows music and I usually use 11-49 with a wound G for that or 12-52 on my '56 CS Strat.

Little update... According to John Page in this article: http://www.buddyhollyonline.com/guitar.html early Strats always had 5 springs with the plate flat to the body. Apparently floating the trem came later in the strat's lifetime.

Very interesting.. you learn something new every day.
