The narrative on the video posted regarding the R&D behind this project leads me to believe that the sharpening of the line angles in the subsequent year models was less a factor of available time finishing the necks as suggested by one of us, but rather a decision to tweak the carving and sharpen the line angles to what we've come to know them to be. Those who own the 50th Anniversary guitar might comment as to whether or not their headstocks are similiar to that on the 60th pictured above.

Roger that! So it's been postulated that either the final finishing was cut short so as to keep the supply line moving, or that there design modifications right from the get go. In keeping with that, I refer you to A.R.Duchossoir's book wherein he discusses the evolution of the headstock shape across the better part of 30 years. Most interesting and truly worth a look see.

Ok, forgive me if this is long, ZZDoc, and 56strat, after hearing your reviews, I had to check out the 60th 54' in person. After tracking down 2 in local stores I headed out, the 1st one was heavy(I never liked heavy strats)but was really nice as you guys stated, great finish in person, no grain pattern to speak of, very plain, neck was bigger than my 50th 54', that I didn't care for, figured I would check out the 2nd one.
The second one was much better, nicely figured, light weight, but same, almost nocaster neck profile.I played this one for a while and decided I really prefer my 50th 54' even though I really like the 60th 54'.Just as I thought my wallet would get a break, I went over to check out the other new American vintage series models, Wow! they had a 56' blonde strat, it blew me away, I just sold my CS NOS 56' blonde strat last year, after getting the 50th 54' I no longer cared for the 9.5 radius and jumbo frets on the CS56'.This AV 56' was incredible, light weight, boomed like a cannon unplugged, the neck was very different than my previous CS 56' this is very close to my 50th 54' neck.
I tried the AV 65' , and 59' strats too, both very nice, but I am a maple neck guy, this new vintage series is great, I hate to come on the custom shop section and go on about these, I have not bought a non CS Fender since the mid 90's, but they really did it with this new series. I am still making my little tweeks(it was great right out of the box), the only real change I will make is a set of 5 RAW vintage tremolo springs(I would add to any strat).Needless to say I negotiated a good price, and walked out with the AV 56', just goes to show you that sometimes they find you! I will add a pic. in a second.

My phone camera, can't get a good shot, but the blonde finish even has the burst effect the originals had, lighter in the center, then almost opaque at the edges.Image

This guitar is spec'd with a 1056 neck carve which, having played one, has quite a bit of wood on it, IMHO. A tad more than the new 60th Vintage '54 if memory serves. What do you think?

The 2 60th 54's I tried had a larger, more U shape than my 50th 54', and my previous CS 56' had more of a 10/56 neck shape than this new AV 56'.The AV 56' is just a tad bit fuller,( with just a bit of spine) than my 54', but they are very close, which was a pleasant surprise to me. I think with the 50th 54' each masterbuilder gave his 54' a bit different neck carve, guess I got lucky with mine, it fits me like a glove.ZZDoc, it may not have been the actual size of the 60th's neck, but the shape that made me feel it was different, I will tell you this, if I didn't have the 50th 54', I would not seek out another, I would go for the 60th, they really were nice, this 56' just really spoke to me.

The NAMM video posted on this project speaks to the fact that they scoped out a few vintage '54's. I suppose they used the best of the lot to composite this guitar. I have no complaints about it thus far. 8)

What ever they did, my hat is off to Fender, they really got it right with this series, I played several of the AV models that day, they were all great, the finish is great, very thin, feels like a vintage Fender should, you just have to find the one that fits you, for me it was this 56'. It completely changed the way I think, I went from being somewhat of a CS snob to a huge fan of this AV series.

Hey my56strat, great looking Blonde !!!
I totally agree with you, these new AV series guitars are great. You just have to find the right one.
Nothing like an ash body/ maple neck Strat :)
