I have a Fender Masterbuilt Mark Kendrick 1954 50th Anniversary guitar that I purchased used from American Music in Bellevue, WA a number of years back.
•Tremolo Plate is stamped with the serial number (#5061)
•Body stamped with MK (Mark Kendrick) initials under the pickguard
•Neck signed/dated by Mark Kendrick (1-05)
•Certificate is dated 4/5/06 and signed by Alex Nicholas
I have received feedback from potential buyers that these guitars were made/sold in 2004.
Can you help me determine why the dates (neck/Cert) have discrepancies?

Hi Skip,
I'll print the specs for you below and you can compare it up and see if it looks right.
Here's what i have on that serial number. Completed 1/28/2005 Sent to Guitar Center 2/10/2005.
The reason for the different date on the cert may well be that the original was lost or misplaced at some point so someone requested a replacement. Replacements are dated according to when the cert is issued----not when the guitar was built. The rest sounds fine to me......but check it out.
All the best,
rob

COMMENTS: In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Stratocaster guitar, the Custom Shop is building the Limited Edition 1954 Strat®. These faithful replications will be made with the same exacting detail as the original instruments, using many of the same machines and manufacturing methods used 50 years ago. Every deep body contour, pickup magnet and screw is a replica of a 1954 Strat. We even went as far as having pre-CBS Fender® employee, Roger Centeno, stamp each tremolo cover plate with the original die. And, yes they do come complete with the round holes!

Each guitar will be built by a Custom Shop Master Builder and will feature a nitrocellulose lacquered, two-piece ash body with offset glue seam and one-piece “U”-shape maple neck. Also, this limited release includes three new Custom Shop Vintage 1954 Stratocaster pickups, an original synchronized tremolo with “Ash Tray” bridge cover, bone nut, special documentation and an original form-fit Brown case.

This Closet Classic finished, 2-Color Sunburst limited release will be available from January 15 to December 31, 2004. You’ve waited 50 years for this day and we’ve taken every measure to make it worthwhile.

Yep, replacement COA. The original was unique to this model of guitar and detailed its production/history. Nice guitar and always much less built by Mark. His also came with little or no lacquer checking.

Yo Rob!!

When I took delivery of my Gilmour Stratocaster NOS on 11/1/08, I unboxed and unwrapped the guitar in the store. The the serial number on COA did not match the serial number on the neck plate of the guitar. Neither did the hang tag. The date on the hang tag and the COA were the same...R42961..10/2/08.
My guitar's neck plate reads R42951. Thus, there was another customer out there with incorrect papers. What is it about the process which permits that to happen? In my case, the COA was reissued with the number which is stamped on the neck plate, and the same date as the one with the error. The print font on the reissued COA was different from the one which accompanied the guitar. My purchase receipt has the error serial number on it. Prep-Tune/Test-Inspector boxes are all signed. How does the last man manage to improperly tag the guitar before it is finally wrapped :?:  I've retained both COA's. I ultimately paid it a no never mind however, given this discussion, my curiosity is piqued. What do production records show regarding the two aforementioned serial numbers in terms of dates of production and final destinations. :? I'd like to include any such information with my records for the guitar. Thanks.

Yo Doc,
Well, the explanation is unfortunately "human error" and fat fingering....which obviously, just shouldn't happen. The different font, I'm not to certain about. The template should always be the same, so again.....points to a human.

For your records:
R42951 shows- David Gilmour Signature Strat NOS our part number 015-0068-806
completed 10/02/2008 shipped to Guitar Center DC 10/18/2008

R42961 shows-David Gilmour Relic our part number 015-0069-806 completed 1/07/2009 and shipped to Fender Europe 1/16/2009.

Good idea to keep it all Doc.
Hope that helped a little.
All the best,
rob

Thanks Rob. That narrows a bit, a discussion we had back then as to if and how the build dates and the serial numbers ran in chronological order. What would clinch it would be the completion dates of -952>-960, but curiosity is not that great to ask you for the research. To many other priorities on your plate. I will, however, add this one thought. For the kind of money the Custom Shop is asking for its product, and I unthinkly paid an MSRP of $3900 for it back then, not to mention what they're asking now, that kind of error is inexcusable. Even moreso these days.
