I hear ya. I'm back to scouring the used market. In a weird, not really related coincidence. I found a listing for what would be close to my ideal CS bass. 51 P, but with the belly and forearm contour. CAR, black guard with a matching CAR thumbrest. Drop dead gorgeous. However, it was exported to France so bringing her back in country would be ridiculously expensive. Over here the market seems to be flooded with the same old, same old. Burst, blonde or black. Though I did find a Surf Green 55 in Nashville that is calling my name. Still. Would have loved to have gotten what I wanted straight from the CS. :/

Yeah, that's really tough luck when taxes is the main reason you can't get what you really want - it's sounds like a really nice bass! My DG MB with a walnut neck is a bit in that direction too (sorry for the dark picture btw). I made the dealer change the order from a gold anordized guard to a black instead, so I'm with you on that one and I think it looks way more cool that way.

But I agree with you that a lot of the "boring" colors are dominant. Besides the bass on the pic, my latest two Fenders is Lake Placid Blue over 3-TSB and Black Sparkle (even though I think Silverburst Sparkle is a more accurate description), and I could never see myself buying a blonde. Surf Green is really nice too and a color I think is a bit underrated - but even though you find something that feels quite right, I guess it would never match feeling of "my own design". The specs I want is a bit crazy, so I would never find something similar, so I have no choice but to try and be patient and hope for the best and that the MB likes the challenge too ;)

That is gorgeous! Very nice! Again, good luck! I hope you get what you want!

Thanks! Maybe that's a bit like what you had in my mind? Too bad it would be too expensive to ship it to the states ;) Actually, I don't play it that much..my MB '62 Jazz and my TB '57 P-bass is my two main basses - it's a shame that I don't use this as much as it deserves, but I guess that's part of always looking for the perfect instrument (that you'll probably never find anyways :) )

Yup. It is pretty much exactly what I was looking for, but with a maple neck. The walnut certainly is interesting, though. Very, very nice.

Yeah, the walnut sets it apart from most other '51 fenders...but at least now you can see that the red and black works really well together :) hopefully that will happen someday :)

I do like the red. Here's the one I found. I'd love to be able to move this back into the states. http://www.woodbrass.com/en/basses-custom-shop-bass-fender-bass-guitar-custom-shop-precision-bass-1951-nos-candy-apple-red-mbdw-p151655.html

Yeah, I can understand why you want a bass like that - it looks amazing!

To the OP: did you contact a showcase dealer or just a regular CS dealer? If you go through someone one Fender is used to processing (many) orders from, I believe it will go much faster. When I ordered my custom built from a showcase dealer, I got a reply within a few days, and after the order was placed it was reviewed and approved by the CS in two weeks. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I ordered from the largest musicstore in Europe that usually make tons of MB/CS orders. It's probably a combo of a long command chain and because I've a lot of custom (some would say crazy ;) ) specs - so I'll just have to wait and see if anything happens soon and hope for the best (or call it off).

Well...why not - or least some of them or else this post will be too long

Masterbuilder Jason Smith
'57 style P-bass
Very heavy relic gold sparkle over 3-TSB
Lightweight ash body
Quartersawn maple neck and 7,25" maple fretboard with 21 vintage frets
57 style soft "V" neck
Neckpickup: Seymour Duncan Antiquity II single coil around 24th fret (like on an old Rick 4001)
Middlepickup: Hand wound '59 "fatter" p-bass pickup
Bridge: Vintage style p-bass

And then there are other things like a black pickguard, black bridge cover, black hipshot tuners etc etc...so it's basically many specs similiar to my teambuilt '57 P-bass, but with the gold'n'black theme, hipshot tuners, the 4001-style pickup (inspired by Stu Cook as I play in a CCR coverband) and a few other things.

A little update: Still no reply whatsoever from Fender...I'm really close to calling it off...it's getting to a point where it's just ridiculous...so gonna wait the rest of the week and then calling it off it nothing has happened by then and spend my money on something else instead...

Good idea. The changes in FMIC marketing practices is not being met well with US 'mom and pop' dealers and many long time fans. Might be of some help if demand started to drop.

Yeah...might as well spend the money on an already build MB here in Europe that I like or might try a Sadowsky instead of always buying Fender...the stupid thing is that I could easily wait the long time it would take for it to be built if they replied back...but almost 7 weeks and counting, just to find out if it's possible is just not acceptable in my book...

Sorry you're going through this, man. I definitely know how you feel. I've never been partial to Sadowsky or any of the other boutique builders because they don't do vintage Fender specs. I'm patrolling the used market now. What a shame, that sounds like a really cool bass. :(
