Is there anyone else who's noted the trickle of conversation on the Custom Shop Forums since the departure of Mike Eldred? It sure isn't as busy here as it used to be years ago. :?

Yep. I've also noticed that a lot of it hasn't been of the positive variety in regards to the shop itself. Hmmmm... The times they are a changin'.

I actually have loved my last 2 guitars from them, albeit one was quite late, they did good by me anyways. But this forum was never really hopping anyways.

There was a great deal more action here in the years prior to your joining, expecially when Mike Eldred set up his. 8)

I remember years ago marvelling at the fact that the guy who ran the custom shop at Fender would come on here and address people personally. He was interested in what was going on. What people thought. You could tell he cared about what came out of the shop and how the shop was viewed by Fender's customers. I really regret not taking the plunge years ago when the shop was under his leadership.

Now that I'm in the market I come back to find that sense of what made this part of the forum special gone. Honestly, it doesn't feel like it's only the forum that has suffered from his absence. His band's doing really good, though. That is awesome to see.

Looking back at the time he closed his Forum we were told that he was obliged to direct his attention to other work related responsibilities. You were likely not party to the highly argumentative thread he monitored during the Jon Mayer Tribute guitar project. Mike is a true fan and supporter of Jon's. It was, at times brutal and yours truly was, at times, a tad opinionated. When the guitar was finally released, he had to cope with an incredible amout of abuse over the fact that there was a difference in the appearance of the neck pickup on the guitar and an on-stage photo of Jon with his. The accusation being that the Fender project was not 100% correct. The matter was eventually resolved but I am convinced that Mike had just about had his fill of us afterwards.

True, I was gone for a good stretch of years. As to Mike getting fed up with the lot of you. As a bassist I can surely understand that feeling. ;)

Mike's a cool guy. I was priviledged to be able to sit down to a late supper with him and his team in Manhattan several years ago. I know that he was aware that there was a shakeup coming at corporate but disappointed that he was one of the grains of salt. I'm following his career closely, support his work product and wish him the best of luck in all his endeavors.

That's cool. I really enjoy what I've seen of his band. Good stuff. It really is a shame he's gone, though. The direction the CS product has been going doesn't interest me at all, to be honest. I can't believe that's a coincidence.

I was actually here when Mike was as well, and still compared to most other strat forums this one was never hopping. But yes it has even quieted down more from there.

It's not just Eldred leaving, but a couple of the most interesting posters have left too, including, I believe, Alain.

But yeah, there's less to discuss here right now. CS doesn't seem to be as much about dreams and making things better anymore, just dumping Yet Another Year's not-quite-replica, in your choice of heavy relic or very heavy relic. The most exciting artist models now come out in the main line, and CS is just rehashing limited choices.

I believe he's devoting most of his time to managing his Guitar Motel.

A very worthy pursuit. I wish I could go see some of those models in person.
That's what CS means to me. Fifty more variations of somewhat-like-the-1963 strat isn't.

So what happened to Mike? Did he leave Fender? Is his doing something else with Fender?

Fender and Mike are history. Mike is gigging full-time now. You can follow him on Facebook...'The Mike Eldred Trio". A track from their second CD, a Presley covers project, was used in the sound track for the animated film.."Planes: Fire and Rescue". It was "Burning Love". You can find it on YouTube.
