I listened to the cd version. I dig the way the guitar sat in the mix.

This is quite a different EQ for Clapton. In that year he would have been using Gold Lace Sensor pickups which yield a different tone from from the Vintage Noiseless type he switched to roughly 10 years later. The guitar simply sings with out being harsh, the sustain is infinite, and I describe it as being 'creamy' or 'violin like'. It's a $@!&* to nail.

See if you can give a listen to George Harrison's "If I Needed Someone" on the Japan Tour CD and let me know what you thing of Clapton's guitar solo. Don't rely on Youtube for this one because there were several performances and they only used one for the recording.

BTW Eric didn't perform that amazing solo on a completely different version of the song.

Just sayin'.

Ditto! Neither on any other take from the '91 Japan tour, nor The Concert for George.

See with Clapton I'm a bit on the fence. I've never gotten the worship of him, but I think that's because my tastes are just different. However, he has nailed tones I like with his classic rock work here and there. Yet whenever he plays more blues-centric work his tone drifts into the territory I don't care for. All just taste, I suppose. Clapton is one of those guitarists that I can either appreciate or pass on by a song to song basis. Which actually makes him fairly special in that regard as guitarists go.

You might find yourself there with respect to his up and coming tribute CD to JJ Cale. He's got that tone quite right.

I think the main issue is the majority of his best material has been 'live', and therefore on bootleg recordings. I guess I am classed as a 'worshiper' but there aren't many studio albums I'd tell people to listen to if they wanted to experience his guitar greatness.

The Breeze will be released next week in the UK, US and Japan. It's already available in Germany, Australia and New Zealand.

Days prior to the release of the new album in the UK and US, old slowhand spoke by phone from London to The San Diego Union-Tribune's George Varga.

In the lengthy interview Eric discussed bonding with Cale at Albert Lee's home around 1980, the idea for The Breeze germinating on a flight from London to Los Angeles on his way to Cale's memorial service and the guitarist's memories of recording The Road To Escondido with Cale in 2006.

I've just read that another album is already on the works. EC will perform a couple of shows during the first months of 2015 before definitely quitting the road in late March of that year.

Hi TKoP,
Well, I said i would find out about the Oxblood......Yes it is exclusive to Troy---based on one of his custom cars. Aside from the Bing Cherry Trans, you might look at Candy Cola-----and I'm told that the Am Std is soon to come out with a dark red called Bordeaux Metallic which also sounds pretty close.

All the best,
rob

Hey Rob,

Thanks! While it is certainly disappointing to say the least that the majority of things I would want on a custom made bass are things that The Custom Shop will not do. I really appreciate your taking the time to expedite this process for me and to acknowledge that it can be sometimes frustrating. You're a credit to the legacy that Leo began.

That being said, I really don't know if I can order the bass in good conscience. Paying serious coin for an instrument full of compromises does not seem like a good proposition to me.

The point of the Oxblood was to match the grille cloth on my new Fender rig. The mute system and RSD to give me the ultimate in flexibility in vintage and modern tones straight from Fender. At this point I am settling on just about everything, and some of it the most basic of things. It feels like I am left with a list of "base options". Much like one might get with a production line instrument instead of a Custom Shop order. So it really isn't a "Custom" bass. It's just a high end boutique model full of things other people in the industry haven't "called dibs" on. Which, let's face it. When it comes to basses there aren't a whole lot to choose from anyhow. Unlike guitars.

To be honest, at this point I could just pick up a Custom Shop 51 or 55 from a dealer, or used and save myself the hassle and money. Pretty unfortunate as this was something I have been looking forward to doing for myself for years. Perhaps further down the road policies and options may change? You never know.

Until then, thanks again for everything. You've been a great help and you do a lot of good work on this forum for people. It is truly appreciated.

KoP

KoP,
I understand and am sorry that it became more compromise than "to boldly go" (ok I'm a geek) for you. Most important is exactly as you state, that you end up with something very special to you not "second choice".
Thank you for the kind words, much appreciated.

All the best,
rob
