That honey blond '89 in its original form had Gold LSes, Elite circuitry and a brown tortoiseshell pickguard. It served as a template for the now-discontinued USA BG Strat, introduced in 1995.

Buddy told Paul to remove the active electronics from the guitar and throw in a parchment pickguard loaded with Vintage Noiseless pickups hooked into a passive circuit.

Yikes. That is bizarre. "I came up with this new guitar so people who can't afford my current guitar can get something cool. However, I'm going to keep people who want to spend good money on a guitar from using the finish on it." That seems... odd.

I don't know that Buddy Guy had any input into the Custom Shop saying that the guitar could not be built. I just received a 'no can do', and that was that. I decided not to pursue it further.

In the end, as you say. We are but drops in a bucket and in the grand Fender scheme of things. What do they really care if I order this instrument or not? I'm sure they don't care at all. Now, if I were Musician's Friend and I was placing an order for a baker's dozen of custom shop instruments every year. Well. That might be a different story.

If you go to Wildwood Guitars' website you can see how many John Cruz models are in inventory. How much time do you suppose it required of him to generate those? Same for The Music Zoo. Two examples of many, I would guess. I expect that the wait time for the likes of John Cruz and Todd Krause is a factor of not just the private orders for individual builds that they are getting from all quarters, but due to large orders they are getting from dealers, as well as the NAMM project assignments they are obliged to complete.
We have a member waiting nearly two years for his Masterbuilt and it took some to assure that he was going to get Abby-wound pickups in his guitar because her retirement had shed some doubt on whether or not THAT spec would be honored.

Just in my personal experience in manufacturing I would think trying to run a custom hand made operation like it was a volume production line would be counter-productive. Just my opinion, of course.

Saw that one on the cover of Guitar Player magazine back in the day. Also in a blues guitar teaching video he made.

Rob,

I am only interested in the tweed/tolex G&G style cases. I'm just wondering does the CS order cases from G&G and are more than the same old options available. (ie: 50's tweed/orange, 60's brown tolex/ gold, or the black tolex with orange or black lining) .

Hi TKoP,
well G&G can pretty much make whatever we ask them to....but yeh it probably would be extra.
BUT:
50's tweed/orange- YES, 60's brown tolex/ gold- YES, or the black tolex with orangeYES or black lining YES

...Still checking on the color........
All the best,
rob

Okay, I hit the G&G site. I will add the 50's Blonde with Red Lipstick interior to my order. Paying a bit extra doesn't bother me. It should match my half stack nicely. Thanks again, Rob. You've probably already saved me over a month of time. :D

Teaching The Blues.

In addition to the '89 Custom he also made use of a Pewter EC Strat from that same year.

I have no idea if that pewter guitar belonged or not to Eric himself.

Okay, I'm probably going to catch hell for this, but...

There are sooooo many guitarists who claim Buddy Guy as an influence that I can't stand. Yet when I listen to Buddy Guy. He is one of my favorite guitarists. His tone is beautiful. Yet I can't stand to listen to most "blues revival" or "british blues" guitarists. Their tones are awful. Harsh and abrasive. Yet when you listen to Buddy Guy. There's so much soul in what he plays and the way it comes across. It's so slick and smooth. Am I missing something? I mean I suppose I understand with the british guys. A lot of them used marshalls with gibsons because that was what was readily available. That tone is like nails on a chalkboard to me. However, that whole revival movement. There are still guys schlockin' that in bars all over. Why take a Strat and make it sound like that? It's hard to sit through. Worse, those are always the guys who love to play about 3X louder than they need to be. I know there are a lot of fans of these guitarists and their tones around here. I just don't see the appeal.

Buddy's amps setting are simple. Volume and treble on 10. The rest on 0. Every ear to its own but his tone lacks a kind of thickness. Gary Hart is a bit more to my liking, as is Joe Bonamassa. Gary Moore, on the other hand, is an example of what I don't care for. I've also heard some variations on Buddy's tone. What comes to mind is "Five Long Years". More Claptonesque on that one.

See. The only time I've ever like Bonamassa is when he's on a Tele. Which then he basically has a very G.E. Smith style tone. Or at least I can hear him in there a bit. Everything else he plays is exactly the type of tone I'm talking about. Harsh. Abbrassive. Overly aggressive. There's no soul in it. Very revival and british sounding. Buddy sounds smooth. Like he floats right above the rhythm section. Classic.

This is the best Bonamassa has ever sounded to my ears. Now don't get me wrong. He grew up around here and he's a phenomenal player. However, his usual tones leave me cold. This was gorgeous, imo.

See if you can give a listen to George Harrison's "If I Needed Someone" on the Japan Tour CD and let me know what you thing of Clapton's guitar solo. Don't rely on Youtube for this one because there were several performances and they only used one for the recording.

BTW Eric didn't perform that kickass solo on the Concert for George version. He just sang the lyrics playing rhythm guitar.

I listened to the cd version. I dig the way the guitar sat in the mix.

The Firemist Gold XII Andy Fairweather-low played on the Concert for George sessions is the same guitar the former Beatle used for the 1991 Japan tour.

Image

I'd recall Eric strumming a XII during his Cream days while recording Dance the Night Away with the band in 1967 - though his bandmate Jimmy Page was more associated with the guitar (Stairway To Heaven, Beck's Bolero [w/ Jeff Beck]).
