Well, this certainly spun out of control. How unfortunate. In the end, I can call Fender Customer Service. I can probably even get put through to a Customer Service Rep in the Custom Shop Division. However, I really don't believe that will make a difference. I think if they COULD do it. They would. They would simply make it a masterbuilt feature as it requires drilling into the bass where you normally wouldn't, and charge me a ridiculous amount of money for it. (and in all likelihood they may make this an option a few years down the line after the Hurley Sig is retired) However, in the end that doesn't really help me and it certainly doesn't make me excited about the prospect of ordering an instrument from them.

I think what it will really come down to is whether or not they bother calling the dealer back before I can find an already built model I like better. I have to tell you there is a 92 Masterbuilt 51 Precision Reissue sitting in Las Vegas for less than this would cost me. Everytime I get a halfassed answer back, and it takes a week or two to hear from them is making that bass look better and better.

The Custom Shop's motto is "When you're ready". Well, I'm ready. Apparently they aren't. Pretty sad. Luckily for me there are plenty of beautiful Custom Shop pieces on both the new and used market right now. While none of them have that EXACT magical mix I'm looking for. Most of them are incredible basses, and are well worth the going rate.

Hope you get your bass built the way you want. Too bad the little loser Internet kitties crawled in & threw up their hairballs

Good Luck!

It is what it is, but they're not the only game in town. I'd give Ed Roman Guitars, in Las Vegas, a shout on that bass you're hankering for.

True, but Roman is just like most boutique makers like Lakland, Sadowsky, Lull, ect. They don't offer the vintage radius as standard, if at all. Ironically, Fender Custom Shop themselves is moving in that direction. So maybe you're right. Soon if you want a Fender that actually plays like a Fender it won't matter what overpriced piece of modern garbage you buy. The fact that the Custom Shop "Time Machine" price list contains "Vintage and Modern Spec" models is pretty sad. Hint: If it's got modern specs. It's not a "time machine" model. The whole thing is just ridiculous at this point. It seems Fender as a company has lost sight of what made them great. Not just the vintage designs and materials. The fact that substance was never sacrificed for style. If I wanted a bass that played like a modern bass I could get that anywhere. I don't. I want a single coil Precision. Oh, well. Like I said. There are plenty of compromises out there on the used market, and in most cases those compromises aren't a big deal. I love both the slab and contoured P body. I like both the 51 and 55 neck profiles, though I do prefer the 55's soft V.

Also, just as an aside. I'm not exaggerating when it comes to wait times on resolutions, and the like. It's been 11 days since I last heard from the Custom Shop through my dealer. In that previous communication the answers they were supposed to get back to us with were partially answered, and spawned more questions. It had been 9 days before that those questions were asked.

I don't know. For a customer willing to spend thousands of dollars that just seems like they don't want my business. Which just compounds any misgivings I now have above and beyond any disappointment I am having about the mute system. I think had the answer on the mute system just been no and communications had been steady and clear then I would have shrugged it off and went ahead with the more traditional model.

However, the refusal to do the mute system and the lack of initiative that is apparent when it comes to dealing with a customer just makes me think that if they don't care enough to treat me with common courtesy. Then they also won't give a damn what the finished product looks like either.

At this point I spend my free time looking at used listings waiting for a model that sparks my interest to pop up. Any of the older vintage spec Time Machine 55's in a color I like (one of which is White Blonde) in NOS or one of the 60th Anniversary Limited Edition 51 Precision Reissues would fit the bill perfectly. It's only a matter of time before someone parts with one.

On that one I would push your dealer to get the questions answered quicker. They can call their rep at Fender every day if they want.

The guy calls multiple times in those gaps. However, he is offered no answers or resolution. He is told that the Rep has "not heard back". So the problem isn't with the dealer. He calls me when he has answers. Believe me. He wants to sell me the bass.

Sounds like the "Custom Shop" isn't a custom shop at all. It's more of "A few additional Options for a whole lot more money and you have to wait two years Shop".

With the advent of the 'doityourselfshop' it seems reasonable to look at it that way.
