I put this in the CS section because it relates to lacquer finishes, I was reading through the care booklet with my 56' AVS strat, #3 chemical reactions states- "use only non-silicone based guitar polish", yet the retro polishing cloth that came with it says "chemically treated, silicone added", is this safe to use with lacquer finishes?Image

FWIW, I've been using mine on my AV52 tele without any issues.

Thanks, I know a few guys on here picked up the new AVS 54', wonder if they are using them too, just seems funny that we are given lacquer care books that say don't use silicone, and given polishing cloths treated with silicone?

Bumped this, was hoping to get more of a response, possibly from Rob(with Fender)

I agree that that is funny.

The reason I heard to avoid silicone products was that it could make future refinishing difficult (if it gets into bare wood, the wood is hard to repaint). I don't know if it could damage the nitro finish. I don't intend to refinish any guitar I own, so I never check if the polishers or cleaners I use on my guitars have silicone.

I read the same thing about future refinishing, after posting this I googled the question of silicone and lacquer, as far as I understand it's ok, would have liked to hear someone from Fenders opinion about it. This just had me scratching my head when I was reading through the case candy.

Hi my56strat,

See what happens when you go "period correct"??? I actually did some checking around....first I'll say.....stick with what the booklet says.....no harm in being cautious.

My sources tell me that the packaging for the true vintage case candy is “period correct” so it says “silicon” on it... BUT great pains were taken to NOT actually include silicon on the cloth.

So ...no worries, the cloth is safe to use. Just that the packaging (wording) duplicates the old packaging.

Cheers,
rob

Awesome! thanks Rob, I do like that the new AV series is so period correct, this 56' is one of the best strats I've had, vintage included, Fender really did it right with this series.
Thanks for clearing it up, now I will use the cloth without reservation.
