The 1987 NAMM prototype and the aforementioned Lot #78 obviously share the same 25dB MDX preamp and mode switch, except Lot #78 uses a 22-fret neck as opposed to the 1987 NAMM prototype which sports 21 frets.

Eric's own torino red prototype originally had the 21dB MDX preamp and mode switch but later this guitar got the same changes as the pewter prototypes (22 frets, removed mode switch, 25dB MDX preamp) before being sold to cricketer Ian Botham.

The guitar used for the South Bank sessions with Buddy Guy was the 2nd Pewter prototype which got that Stevens 22-fret birdseye neck a couple of weeks before the Shoreline concert in 21/09/1988.

Well, interesting! :o Eric playing one of his pewter "smoker" prototypes with the Stevens 22-fret flamed maple neck... The switch to 22 frets didn't occur until February 1988! Truth or illusion? :?

(This shot dates from April 19th, 1987).

Nice spot! I think... photo illusion perhaps (?) I've not seen any photos clearly showing him playing a 22 prior to Feb '88, although there are some of him playing a 21 late '88.

One of his guitars had already the Stevens 22-fret flamed maple neck attached as you told us a couple of years ago, the 22-fret birdseye maple neck was fitted in the second pewter prototype a couple of weeks before the Shoreline concert in 21/09/1988.

Apparently Mike Stevens put the flame maple neck in the first pewter prototype a couple of days after the South Bank show and not in February 1988 as you previously stated. Two years later that flamed neck has been transferred into a black body crafted by J. W. Black after Eric's personal request for a modernized version of "Blackie".

Both guitars served as Clapton's main stage and studio axes until the first half of 1994 - date during which Eric began using olympic white Strats strung with heavier gauge strings.
