Here's a photo of him with the guitar you're talking about: Iridescent Blue finish with white polka dots and Noiseless™ pickups.

This model doesn't sport "Elite"™ electronics.

That doesn't look iridescent to me. A highly saturated blue, but I see no iridescence.

We expect a reply from ZZDoc soon, I'm pretty certain he knows the story about the development of this famed Chicago bluesmaster's personal axes. Paul Waller was chiefly responsible for this Custom Shop creation.

If you search Vintage Guitar archives, you should be able to zero in on the Buddy Guy cover story in which this guitar was featured in a side bar. I was fortunate to meet Mike Eldred and Paul Waller about four years ago, and enjoy a late night supper and chat in midtown Manhattan where they were overnighting, after they had finished the Fender Road Show at the Music Zoo in Roslyn, NY. We touched on the subject of a Buddy Guy signature Strat whereupon I was informed that Paul was building Buddy's guitars. His blond Strat, the '89 Custom Shop guitar, which he's been seen with often lately, was torn down and given the photo/measurments once over backstage during the Chicago Crossroads concert that spring. Whether or not my expectation that a CS level repro of the blond guitar would be forthcoming was premature, the version shown above, appears to be a one-off for him exclusively, as of this writing. As Chromeface notes, the guitar does not have active electronics, as I knew it would not, but I believe the pups are VN's. Thus, he's broken from the Clapton mold on this one as well as the blond. Buddy's signature tone, in part, comes from fulling rolling off the bass levels in his amp, having the treble and gain full up, and controlling the beast from the guitar. It's no secret that Buddy get that guitar to sustain forever, should he choose to.

Briefly addressing your other questions. Buddy had a white on red polka dot Strat which he swapped out for a fan's vintage 2SB Strat during a private meet and greet in Florida several years ago. The fan wanted his pickguard signed by Buddy. Buddy, reminded of his original Strat, offered the guy $500 plus the polka-dot for the 2SB. Buddy's black on white guitar, which I've named The Dalmation for talking point, is a one-off. Fender will not build one for ya. I know....I asked, long time passing.

For present, I suggest you get yourself a white on black Standard and swap out the Mexican pups for VN's or what ever other blues-based pups you desire  ....DiMarzio Vintage and Heavy Blues went into mine when I had it. Any honey blond V-neck Strat with a white pickguard is representative of essentially what he plays. The company would have to see the potential for a profit on doing a Buddy Guy repro for them to invest any money or time in such a project. Seriously, I don't see the same interest at that presented by the Nile Rodgers guitar, for example.

While Eric simply removed the TBX from his guitars after made the switch to the VNs in March 2000, Buddy pulled out the whole Elite circuitry from his axes!

The aforementioned CS '89 in its original form sported three Gold Lace Sensors powered by the Fender Elite circuit. It also came with a brown shell pickguard.

In 1995 Fender issued a MIA BG Strat in honey blonde which was a snapshot of Buddy's guitar.
This model was also offered with a 2-tone sunburst finish and an aged white pearloid pickguard a couple of years later before being dropped from the pricelist in 2010.

Buddy used various incarnations of his black polka dot Strat throughout the years, one of which sported a pair of humbuckers and the other was fitted with Lace Sensors and Elite electronics.

Cudos much appreciated  , however, this is, by and large, a rather amical group of informed, talented, and gifted individuals willing and able to opine on a variety of topics. As far as that blond '89 is concerned, I got charged up about that initially but eventually came to feel that it has less charisma than his polka dot guitars. Of the lot, I would have like to have had a 'Dalmation', as opposed to a 'Domino' [which I did own for a time] and was quite disappointed when the CS refused my request. If I really wanted to pursue it, there are other sources which I could have employed to strip and refinish the MIM Standard BG model. I have limited storage space, and three 'big fish' which pretty much satisfied my interest in Fender guitars with active electronics. However, there's nothing like having your heart's desire satisfied so, for your sake, I hope they decided that a Buddy Guy Tribute model is worth the time, and I certainly hope you've squirreled away the cost for it if and when it happens.

Doc

As an aside, the dot pattern on this guitar is the same as that on the BG Artist Standard.
The dot pattern on his first polka dot guitar is denser in number and distribution. I don't care for it as much.

Is that guitar you're talking about?

It was never pictured. I have seen photos of another which had the 'production line' pattern. The pattern pictured is more like his first 'Domino'.

Found a photo of Buddy cradling a blue polka dot '70s Thinline with a Tele Deluxe "large headstock" neck.

Image.

Buddy is not only a Fendermaniac, he also likes PRSses and Guilds!

Well, interesting! :o Eric playing one of his pewter "smoker" prototypes with the Stevens 22-fret flamed maple neck... The switch to 22 frets didn't occur until February 1988! Truth or illusion? :?

(This shot dates from April 19th, 1987).

Just shows ya how time flies when yer hav'in fun and playing what a company will offer you an endorsement for. That installation date on the Stevens neck vis a vis the date on the photo is interesting when considering the fact that the 21 fret prototypes were introduced at the 1987 Winter NAMM. Couldn't have been more than a couple of weeks between that date and the photo's. Can't tell if the mode switch is gone, but just might be.

+1

Once the switch to 22 frets was completed the mid boost bypass toggle has been removed from the guitar (excepting Lot #78, pictured below).

These changes also marked the move to the 25dB MDX.

Image

(Note: Lot #78 was sold for a benefit auction at Christie's for the fetching price of $63,000. Not to be confused with the so-called "Night Music" guitar.)

My Torino Red prototype appears to have plenty of what Eric called 'compression'. Can't see much difference between it and my '89 Pewter.
