If you mean Mike Eldred, which I assume you do, he and Fender have sadly (for us anyway) parted company.

OK, I had heard a rumor, but I don't like to spread them. Seem to be a lot of changes happening within FMIC these days.

The CEO Larry Thomas has retired also. I notice that since Mike left he no longer seems to be playing a Fender!

I remember Mike saying that, years ago, he used to have a Silvertone/Harmony Espanada, the one with the aluminium binding, and he really liked it. However it got sold/traded/lost/given away...that thing that happens to guitars... and he had been on the lookout for another. Obviously he found another, and he has been using it regularly ever since. Almost exclusively on his new CD I think.
At the moment his old Tele is having a well earned rest!

I'm sure that Mike has lots of things going on. One thing recently is the track "Burning Love" from "Elvis Unleaded" is being used in a Disney trailer!

Check it out here...

Larry retirees at the end of May. There will be a temporary CEO while they search for his replacement.

Sean...I follow Mike on Facebook through The Mike Eldred Trio page. I've set them up as an 'Interest' so I get notified every time they post something. Looks like they're doing some interesting things.

I'm sure we are all curious to see what rolls out of FMIC. Apparently the investors are not happy campers. In my racket, they called the sort of thing 'surgical debulking'. The question will be whether or not they get all of the tumor.

Don't think Larry Thomas is going to be doing any motion picture sound tracks either. Not a bad run though for a kid who started out as a Guitar Center sales person.

Wow. I have to be honest. I've been seriously contemplating ordering a CS P bass early next year. This actually gives me pause... :?

Agreed. I'll keep my eye on the used market. In my experience sweeping changes like this are never for the better. At least in the short term. I'd have preferred to order one custom made for me, but the reality is that what I would order isn't anything extravagant. Basically a 55 P in a non-standard finish with a 51 style slab body. It would have been a nice treat as I'm turning 40 this year, but I'd rather not drop that kind of money into an operation with transitional leadership.

Fender has had so called transitional leadership since day one, this is nothing new, people get old, and someone new has to take over, it has to happen in order for a company to stay in existence.

There is absolutely nothing to be concerned about if you want to order a guitar, you're just as safe in doing so as ever.

Fender isn't going anywhere, but from the way some are talking, it's as if they're trying to talk it into being.

I don't think Fender is going anywhere. What I mean is that the CS in particular will have a change in leadership in addition to the company itself. Now, that may all amount to nothing. The CS might trudge on with business as usual. Which is just fine. However, changes like this often result in stress in an environment. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Those things sometimes creep into one's work.

On a production line guitar I wouldn't worry as much if foreman bob quit on Friday and my bass hit the pickguard assembly on Monday morning. Even if a screw gets missed or what not. It's only going to affect that area of the guitar and it might get caught anyhow. However, in a small close environment like a CS I'd think that a change in leadership might be a big deal. Especially if it's coupled with changes coming from upper management. Changes that people might view as negative.

Now, the chances are good that it might not make a bit of difference, or it might only make a little for a short time. However, a CS investment isn't like buying a production run piece. Not even because of the pricetag. Because of what's put into it. It's YOUR guitar/bass. It's something you are having crafted for you. Not just an instrument built to an engineers spec sheet. If it comes in and it's not right. That's rough.

I have no doubt that these men have a littany of issues they must address with respect to what is being asked of them in their day to day affairs. Now lay on top of that any questions they may be obliged to raise with respect to their futures with the company and your observations are well made.
