Good show!! Wonder the reason for the rapid turn around time in this case?

Here's the pic.
I guess the rapid turnaround time was due to the fact that it was pretty a straightforward order, nothing fancy. I suppose relicing can add weeks. I can wait to lay my hands on her!! Apparently it has pat.pend saddles and the newer shallower case.

I really like how wide the black is. The rosewood board looks really dark and I didn't even choose the dark rosewood option!

My guitar differed from yours in that it had gold hardware, all black plastic, SCN pups and and a Clapton circuit. It was supposed to have a Clapton v-neck but didn't come that way. Nor did they get the sunburst the way I wanted it. I wanted it darker, like the SRV guitar. See, the transition zones were softer and the bands less distinct when the SB3 was introduced in '58. It was kind of like watercolor. Much less red.I owned one, so I know.. The COA read '65 Stratocaster. It took a year. I sent it back for a new neck. It took 6 mos more. The neck was their generic soft V- not a Clapton. I gave up the fight. Eventually swapped it out for my Gilmour. Hope all your expectations are realized when it's finally in your hands. Rock on :!:

Here's a more detailed review. Pictures to follow.

My experience ordering at the custom shop has been extremely satisfying. First of all, I picked a showcase dealer who seemed to regularly deal with custom orders and who is well-known by the folks at the custom shop. I gave him a call and I realized that I would be ordering a guitar from a passionate dealer (he said: I'm accepting your order, that's the kind of guitar that I like, I knew I had to do business with him.) who loved everything about Fender and could relate to my concerns and questions and understand my fussing about details (for example, I wanted a specific decal and he made sure that I got it.) Communication was excellent, and the months flew by without my noticing them.
Finally, I got news from Rob Schwartz that my guitar was ready and I contacted the dealer and we arranged for it to be shipped.
The guitar exceeds my expectations. The body is a 2 piece, (very hard to see) center seam alder body. I've scarcely seen an alder body with that much grain visible. At first I even wondered if they'd made a mistake and put an ash body. The sunburst is exactly the way I hoped it would be. The black edge seems to be a very dark brown. I'm curious to see how it will age.
The '65 neck shape is perfect for me. What strikes me is how resonant the guitar is. I'm blown away by how the notes sustain-- longer than my 335. The guitar is very touch responsive, notes seem to bloom at the slightest pick attack. In spite of the 7.25" radius and vintage frets, the guitar plays very easily .
Plugged in, the custom 60s pickups bring me that strat sound that I had in my head, a slightly darker sound than the custom 69 that sounded to my ears too metallic. In between positions are "from heaven" as John Mayer would say.
The only "flaw": when I got the guitar there was what looked like leftover rubbing compound under the string tree and the upper horn strap button. That was taken care of very easily.

The Cruz tool kit is fantastic.

My two regrets are:
-not choosing 6150 fret wire.
-not ordering it in Closet Classic.
- I think that the CS should slightly tint the neck even for NOS instruments. That pale, whitish neck just looks wrong. I hope gigs and sunlight will eventually fix this :)

In conclusion, I am 100% satisfied with my purchase, my two regrets notwithstanding -- I should have done my homework better. The other regret I have is that I don't know how soon I will be able to duplicate the experience -- ordering another one. Hopefully in 2016 :)

PS: Dear Doc,

While I value any input, I can't help but notice that most of your posts on this forum are rather negative about the Custom Shop. I don't really understand what you're trying to achieve here, are you trying to discourage people from ordering a guitar from the custom shop? I'm not saying that these forums should be criticism free, there's always room for improvement, but I feel that the CS has improved in the past few years. I used to have a 1997 CS 69 strat that really was not special at all. Seven or eight years ago I could not have ordered the same instrument as a team built and it would have been less historically accurate. The instrument I have today is top notch and already has a 'vibe'. Call it honeymoon period, but I feel excited and like a rock star every time I pick it up.

First off, congrats on a beautiful strat! 2nd, don't worry about having ordered it in NOS, I have had a couple(I actually prefer the necks light as they are when new, and don't care for fake tinted maple)Even when kept in the case my NOS necks started to darken quickly, I just bought a new AVRS 56' strat in April, it is nitro(the new flash coat) and it's case kept and is already yellowing, it was really white when I got it.
As far as the frets go, when they start to wear it's an easy refret with a rosewood board. It sounds like it's a good one tone wise, so enjoy it, and as you play it will age nicely(and naturally).

Congratulations! I am pleased to learn that you are ecstatic with respect to the outcome of your project. There has been a lot of water under the bridge in the 7 years of these Forum's existence and I have pretty much seen it all. Along with the accolades, there has been a considerable amount of disappointment at that which the shop has promised to deliver. I have already told my tale. I didn't get the finish I wanted, nor the neck carve I wanted, and had to wait 18 mos total for a less than satisfactory product. There are others as well. We have lost members, both valuable contributors as well as heavy investors in Custom Shop product, because they had reached their limit of intolerance, for what ever reason, with where they felt The Shop and FMIC were falling short. I should like to think that your satisfaction is the result of our insistence that the Shop do better for the dollar they are asking. With respect to one of my special pet peeves,....they have yet to put a Custom Shop guitar in a fitted case the likes of which PRS puts every one of their production line American built guitars in. I've only seen one like it....for a one-off guitar...at a NAMM show a year or two ago. If its possible, it should be.
