That's a master volume setting of just under 3 with Channel 2 gain set on 9. At the bottom of the first page of the Owner's Manual there appears the following:

YOUR AMPLIFIER IS LOUD! EXPOSURE TO HIGH SOUND VOLUMES MAY CAUSE PERMANENT HEARING DAMAGE!

There's a reason for this warning. King Snakes are huge tone monsters capable to kill your ears with their venomous fangs.

I am a Pete Cornish user myself. I have his Treble Booster and his three way splitter. Great stuff.

Cornish worked also for other famous musicians, including Pete Townshend among others.

The OP complains about muddy tone without a TBX in his guitar. Five pages later and no one has suggested replacing the standard tone pot with a TBX unit? $15 and 15 minutes.

It's a plan, but he's got a Masterbuilt Strat. He might not want to do that given the warranty issues. It's interesting that, in 7 years, he's the first player having issues with EQ'ing that model guitar. Minus the TBX, and with the boost rolled off, it's your basic Strat with noiseless pickups. If they're classic stacked single coils, they're really humbuckers in disguise. Rolling in 25db of midboost gives one a really 'thick' HB tone on those babies. That's what Clapton was seeking....''more compression'', he's quoted as asking for. The OP might not care for it.

Then he shouldn't complain.

Seems to me any authorized Fender tech (a GOOD one) would be able to swap out a "defective" tone pot without affecting the warranty.

I expect not, as long as the replacement is a conventional tone pot. The Masterbuilt version has no TBX. Clapton doesn't have one in his guitar. They were removed when the VN's were installed.

For a period between 2004 and 2008 Teambuilts shared the same specs as the Masterbuilts.

Per Clapton's request the TBX was added in 2009.

These dates interest me. What's the source on this. I raise the question recallingl an extensive thread, long past, which concerned itself with 'ufboy's interest in ordering a Masterbuilt Clapton guitar. He was confused about specs because those in the products section listed a TBX, but he was given to understand that the Masterbuilt guitar did not have the TBX. It had been removed when the VN's went into the guitar. Apparently this thread has been wiped. It may have been on the Eldred forum. Nor can I find the member listed any longer. But I can reach him privately and will attempt to add to this discussion once I've had a reply.

The changes occurred in March 2000, though Eric occasionally used Lace Sensors for slide until February 2010.
Since that date all his slide axes are fitted with VNs.

Back :-)

There are absolutely no problems for me to replace the conventional pot with a TBX but this was also not my question.

I believe that Eric knows what he does so I simply wonder how you guys deal with the mid boost without the TBX. To me adding the mid boost adds gain (which is good) but it also makes the tone very muddy (which is bad). The TBX can filter out certain frequencies so you get back a satisfying tone - this is what he did in the 80s and 90s. I wonder what he does now NOT having the TBX as an EQ compensation.

Basically I expected a few people here who own masterbuilts and can share their thoughts about dealing with this challenge. That's all.
