Hello there folks :)

I have set my goal which is buying an american Eric Clapton signature stratocaster. I save each $$$ (polish złoty actually) and soon I'll visit my local guitar store. The question is what's the difference, for an ordinary living creature like me, between custom and non custom EC strat? According to what fender compare devise on their webpage say it's actually the same guitar, excluding the bridge (which as far as I know is blocked on each version) and being made by luthier instead of a line worker. What makes custom shop guitar almost three times more expensive ((in that particular case) than the regular, factory made instrument?

PS. Please don't tell me that the colour palette makes difference :P

Can't wait to see your responses. Greetings, Adrian

Consider this in the thinking. If you have the cash, and the time to wait for a Clapton Stratocaster masterbuilt by Todd Krause, you will own a guitar built by the man who builds Eric Clapton's personal instruments. With MSRP's rising at they are, and Todd's backlog of work, I'd say you'll have to anticipate a high number in both instances. A teambuilt guitar will be less costly, and more quickly obtained. The differences are subtle. In a reply several years ago, Mike Eldred suggested that Custom Shop Claptons will have two piece body woods, more carefully selected, and the attention to fit and finish is more precise. The Masterbuilt Clapton does NOT have a TBX, because that's the way Eric wants them. I think Custom Shop guitars feel different. Others do not. If you can find a dealer who is stocking both a production line Artist Series guitar, as well as a Custom Shop Signature Series guitar, play them both, and see if the juice is worth the squeeze. As for the Masterbuilt, you won't be able to play it until you own it unless they happen to have one lying around waiting for a home.

They had the TBX before Eric switched to the VNs in March 2000.

Clapton used the TBX only when he played slide guitar because of the throaty tone he got from the LSes.

Edit: his slide guitars are fitted with VNs and a normal tone control a standard feature as of February 18, 2010.
