Hello,

I'm new to this forum, but have a few questions... Just got myself a Custom Shop Heavy Relic 69 Strat, and I love this guitar!!! I had some major setting up to do since the guitar didn't fit the case and the neck shifted so badly, but she's playing like a dream now!

My questions are:

The 'dirty neck', is way too dirty! I want to remove the black paint on either side of the frets... Now I know this is a heavy relic, but the black on the frets are so over kill. (I'll attach a picture showing this) I just want to know what you guys think is safe to use, especially since what ever I do use to remove the black will directly touch the nitro surface on the neck. So what's the best solvent?

Second question, and this might be a dumb one, I'm a player, and not one to just display a guitar like this. The other night I played for about 4 hours and when I was done I had a big pile of paint chips on the floor! I thought for some reason the custom shop must clear coat these, but I must be wrong? What do to guys think? Am I going to see this guitar lose all of its paint due to the relic job? Or maybe it's just a little bit that didn't get buffed out?

I've contacted Fender direct with these questions, and still no answers? Any help would be great!

Thanks in advance!

I wrote Fender a week ago... and nothing? I talked with the music shop today, they said they'd ask?

My local luthier said that maybe alcohol would work? Or Prep Sol?

I guess a local luthier is more help than Fender ;)

Yeah, I'll try them again, maybe next week. I forgot NAMM is coming up, they're probably swamped?

Lacquer thinner and you'd have to respray clear or amber nitro. Why get such a heavy relic to begin with? I mean you paid extra for this treatment.

I like the heavy relic, I just want to take the black down just a little bit. The photos of this guitar didnt seem as dark in those areas.

Got you, not sure what kind of base they use for that application, CS guys would know. Lacquer thinner will take anything and everything off, including hide glue.
