i go through a lot of guitars.

ALOT of guitars.

i have wanted a real fender 7 string custom shop strat for 20 years.

i briefly owned a michael stevens built proto but the reverse headstock and bridge position made both the whammy and proper intonation for a low a impossible.

my friend maestro alex gregory (who had a sig 7 model with fender) had 4 final version protos recently completed, after several interruptions. i finally got one from him today.

in his words:

"Fender built it at the custom shop, under the strict supervision of George Blanda (head of R & D) over a period of 2 years.

It has the Custom shop logo on the back of the headstock and all standard decals (including my Fender "corrected" signature on front).
It has the special Fender case and everything else.
The finish is nitro "Surf Green" sparkle.
It has some "custom shop" very light aging (even on the black pick-guard).
The hardware is gold.

The only non-Fender part is are the set of 3 pick-ups which are Seymour Duncan MAG stacks. That has always been the case for every single guitar, as Fender could not make the pick-ups.

That is about it."

it's magnificent.

alder body

quartersawn one piece neck with skunk stripe and butt end truss rod adjustment

scalloped board

24 frets

custom wound duncans

custom 4 point whammy (flawless operation and tuning stability)

s1 switching system

Absolutely weird

FYI… the CS did a 7-string Showmaster in 2000, it lasted only a year then discontinued.

I'm not sure what the point is of scalloping the highest frets when you have jumbo frets like these and a relatively short scale - it's not like you could possibly push the string down to the fretboard on the highest few frets even if you tried.

And I'm also unsure about the nut - it looks like the 7th string might come off easily, while the 2nd (B) is a really deep cut.

Otherwise, a very unique guitar, and I hope it will give you lots and lots of enjoyment.

Well, he didn't really have a signature model because it never went into production, never was available. Do these recent prototypes mean that there will finally be a production model? After about 25 years! That was some interruption, for sure.

Do you know how Fender and AG settled things?

Nice. Prefer a uniform color of plastic. The 'all black' works nicely with that paint.

I agree - black and gold looks better than the mix of black and white, gold and chrome.
Too bad the nut is white and the poles aren't gold plated.

Well....I understand a graphite nut but I've never seen magnetic pole pieces plated with gold metal. Has such ever existed?

They're not uncommon. My PRS has them:

Roger that. I had two of those. An '08 Johnny Hiland model in tortoise, and a '94 CE24 whale blue quilt top with gold hardware. Both swapped out for Fenders. The PRS necks don't suit my hand, but their cases beat Fender's hands down.

Agreed. The PRS neck is extremely easy to bend or vibrato on, but it's so small and has so fat frets that it's also limited. Barre chords tend to go sharp, and you can't use thin strings without getting fret buzz. I prefer the compound radius Fender neck.

But you sure can't get a Fender with a nice bound case with flame maple burst for even twice the price of the PRSes. You have to go into Select territory to get flame maple, and even then, it's not nearly as well matched as a PRS - every Select I've seen has been badly mirrored with right/left patterns that miss each other by up to half an inch, and a highly visible line down the middle.
So there, at least, PRS does a much better job at a fraction of the cost.
And you get birds. Or in my case, not exactly birds.

................not a bad deal if you just want the guitar for 'wall candy'.
