Hi there,
I have a question about a 2000 custom shop '56 NOS strat I have.I took it apart recently to verify, stamps, etc and it has "special" stamped on the back of the neck.Would this have been a custom order? or just custom order neck?...the neck is highly flamed.
Also, the COA is dated 7/11/00 and the neck is stamped Mar 2001,..I guess it hung around the factory for awhile.Everything look legit on the guitar, burnt in body stamps,etc..so not to concerned there.Who would "Mike" have been who signed the neck?
Any help would be great, just curious

Several questions come to mind....

-when, where and how did you acquire the guitar?

-what description is on the COA and who signed it?

-is there a # on the neck plate or the back of the headstock that appears on the COA

-the 'Mike' which comes to mind might be Mike Stevens. Once the build date is verified Fender might be able to cross-reference that to an employee. I don't know that Mike Eldred would have been involved in building a neck, but......

-pictures would be of great assistance.

Doc

thanks for the reply Doc,
The COA is signed by Mike Eldred.I am trying to figure out how to post a pic,..new here...so hopefully one soon.Serial number is on the neck plate R7469,..no other numbers. It is also written on back of the neck "stock w/ FL" and a 2,the rest I can't read.My guess is it's a stock 56 NOS with a custom ordered flamed out neck.

Send to consumerrelations@fender.com giving them the plate number, all the dates and identifying marks. See what information they can offer you. What's confounding here is that the neck date stamp is later than the date on the COA whose date is usually the date of final assembly. From your presentation of this it appears that you are not neither the original owner/nor did you place the custom order for this relic which has, from what I can see, the look of a Gilmour #1. Am I correct? Something else occurred to me out of personal experience, and something you wrote. The Custom Shop is not a perfect entity. $@!& happens! It took them 18 mos to build a guitar I ordered and the neck was not done correctly. It took another 6 mos for the correction to be made. If the guitar in question was indeed finished in July 2000, and returned for a correction, it might very well be reasonable to have the later date on the neck. The COA's date would remain the same, as it did in my case, though I never pulled the guitar apart to check dates.
Send to Fender and keep us posted.

Thanks Doc,..I acquired the guitar recently in a trade.I only took it apart because somebody questioned if it was a fender body because it was so heavy,..but it is legit, fender custom shop logo impressed, model in pickup cavity,etc....but what caught my eye was the special stamp.I think your right,it was either sent back..or the neck was swapped out after completion.
see what Fender says....
