Hi guys,

I got a brand new 2012 CS Custom Deluxe Strat in March and it's by far my favourite guitar. I've looked after it obsessively, always keeping it in it's case and cleaning it after every session. As a result, I know every inch of it and every slight mark or blemish.

So I was horrified when I took it out of it's case and noticed a crack in the finish.

There has definitely been no impacts to the guitar or case at any point and I don't wear jewellery or anything l like that so I'm stumped as to where it came from. It's never even sat in a stand. There's no indentation or anything, but you can feel the crack if you run your finger over it. It's also weird that it's black rather than the colour of the finish. It almost looks like something has gouged it, but this is 100% not the case.

Does anyone have any ideas what would cause this? It's not a huge deal as I know no guitar is going to stay immaculate forever, just bugging me how this happened. Nearly every other guitar has a scratches, bashes or dents but nothing like this. Any opinions would be welcome.

Crack or impact ? Look impact.

Since march ,10 months . If you did not receive like that , you do it :(

How and when ??? Are you sure nobody play with when you're not there ?

It certainly looks like you brushed against something with it.
Could be anything - belt, cuff link, arm rest...

Have to agree with the other guys. Looks more like an impact ding than a crack.
As suggested anything could do it but if you are using straplocks and it being close to the strap thingy then maybe it happened that way when you removed the strap....Just guessin of course :D

I think the photo is a bit misleading in that it makes the crack look like a dent/impact mark. Where it is there is actually no indentation at all. There's a dark line under the crack, but when you run your finger over it you can only feel the sharp edge of the crack and no indentation. Same if you move it in the light, there's definitely no dent. It looks more like the cracks you can get in the finish around the neck joint if a guitar is dropped on it's head.

I know it sounds crazy and unbelievable, but I am 100% sure it's never been bashed or had anything bash into it. I have absolutely babied this guitar to the point of being obsessive, e.g. making people roll up shirt sleeves so the buttons in the cuffs don't scratch it! ;)

I thought it might be a temperature thing, but it's stayed in the case in the house and it was there when the temps were till unseasonably warm and before this colder spell.

Just have to live with it I guess and it'll hopefully stop me obsessing as much! :)

Hey, the pic looks like a normal "ding" but judging by your description it could be the finish sinking into the grain. I have a 07 American Vintage tele where I can see a dark line and feel the edge of the line. Nitro finish on a wood body where natural mineral streaks occur cause unforseen natural inconsistencies. If this is the.case it is considered normal for this type of finish. Perhaps this is the case, seems to be on my guitar. Hope this helps in some way.

It could also be a ding from before the lacquer set. In which case the coating would mask it initially, but as the coating dries out, it becomes more visible, and the coating might crack.

There also looks like there might be a finish crack next to the strap lock, just to the right of the twelve o'clock position. Is that what you meant, and not the big ding in the center?
