Let me preface this by saying that I own 5 custom shop strats and two teles and have bought/sold and traded dozens more over the years.

I currently only own relics ranging from closet classic to heavy. I can't figure out why on moderate to heavy relics, they are not aging the trem springs. I have a 57 heavy relic that is beat to hell and the hardware is really aged. I love the guitar. I never keep the trem cover on and the springs are all shiny and new.

I would highly recommend aging the springs on these also. Just throwing it out there.

Not sure if this has been covered before.

I think it depends on when the guitar was built, who did the relic'ing, and how many springs were inside too.

why does the time period matter you might ask... simple example:

my John Cruz Ultimate Relic from 2009: shiny springs.
my John Cruz Heavy Relic from a few months ago: all three springs that were installed by John are super dirty, matching the vibe of the instrument. the two other springs in the case: brand new and shiny.

maybe it's also got something to do with the "no backplate" thing.
on the floor traveler for my second JC, there is a "no backplate, put in case" note.
if the guitar is supposed to have lived its life as a no backplate instrument, then it makes sense that the springs would be relic'd.

I guess in the end it's up to each builder, including the people in charge of the relic'ing in the Teambuilt section. I am sure any Master Builder will do it if you ask him, but other than that, it's mostly "luck" whether or not you get an instrument with aged tremolo springs.

Hello,

There's a simple reason why they don't relic the springs.
It's not good for the tone and functionality.
A relic spring with rust on it does have a negative effect on the workability of your tremolo if you use it.
Maybe the spring will break after some time.
The springs will get hard and you don't have this soft tremolo feeling when you use it.

So, it's better to leave the springs bot relice.

If JC is doing it on some of his masterbuilts I don't think that is the case. Not looking for rusted non functioning springs. Just some faded with a little patina. I never keep the back plate on relics and it just looks weird with nice shiny springs.

What's next? aged strings? come on the trem works much better with new springs, I change them every few months.

I own two Claptons...one is 26 years old, the other is 23 years old. Well cared for and in excellent condition. The springs have not oxidized. They were not intended to.

Do you pre-stretch 'em?

No I don't stretch 'em, I have three different kinds of springs, light medium and heavy. I don't use the light ones anymore because I only play 009 strings on my tele these days. I use medium springs for 010 strings and heavy for 011 and 012 strings.
I like it and I really notice a difference but I guess it's a luxury thing.
