If it were me, I wouldn't cancel yet. I would feel that I'd just wasted almost two years of waiting...

I would be expecting a substantial reduction in the price that I was originally quoted though...

I'm in two minds. I have waited 2 and a half years for this guitar so don't want to bail just yet. I want those pups that I ordered.

I seriously expect, based upon the response you received from Todd, that they are no longer available unless he gave you additional information that they might be obtained somehow. If you're going to settle, get a set of Josefina. Maybe 20 years down the road, some yet unsung guitar hero will have discovered the Josefina's and they will have earned the same patina as the Abby's. That's what it's all about in this game. At the end of the day we may all be really following the Pied Piper and paying big bucks for the tune. A thing becomes worth no more than someone is willing to pay to own it, for whatever reason.

I know this is tough, but you need to understand this: when you specified that you wanted handwound pickups, it didn't mean Abby-handwound.

sure, it was implied, since at the time Abby was the one in charge of the process, but if she were to retire, which happened, the handwinding was going to be done by someone else, that someone else being Josefina.
the handwound option is still the handwound option, meaning it still costs the same amount of money, it wasn't devalued after Abby left, so I am guessing that in the eyes of the Custom Shop, everything is fine with your order.

you probably are one of many people in this situation actually.

I have a Masterbuilt Strat that's still at the Shop currently, with Abby pickups in it, because the guitar was ready before she retired (it's still there because I asked for a refinish). but I went with Greg instead of guys like John or Todd with insane wait times. there is just too much that can happen over the course of 3 years.

He opens his thread by stating that he specified hand wound Abigail Ybarra pickups. If that was so stated in writing on his order sheet then, IMHO, the Shop was obliged to assure that all of their orders requiring same, received and entered prior to her retirement date, were going to be satisfied as written.

there is no such thing as an Abby-handwound option in the FCS quote guide, so specifying that you only want her to wind your pickups is a shot in the dark. it's kind of like asking for a particular guy to spray the paint on your guitar.

of course Abby was the "default" handwinder so like I said, it was implied in the handwound option, but she is now retired.

if the guitar was started in time before her retirement, the pickups would have been wound by Abby, but apparently this wasn't the case, so they will be handwound by Josefina. it's not like they can bring Abby back to wind more pickups.

The quote sheet also specifies that 'final approval, price verification, and estimated delivery date must be specified by the Fender Custom Shop.' That begs the question of whether or not the above disclaimer had been satisfied. If they did so in the affirmative, his having specified Abby Wound pickups, IMHO that's what they were obliged to deliver absent telling him, at the time they accepted the order, there was no guarantee. They should have also been monitoring the time line of these orders once Abby gave notice, to assure that their supply of pickups would be sufficient to meet all orders placed prior to her retirement. Only a shlock shop operation fails to dot 'eyes' and cross 'tees' where and when they ought to.

From the Custom Shop July 2012 "Hi Paul - sorry for the long gap. The hand-wound pickups are currently Abbys by default - I am however trying to get the spec sheet changed to read 'Abbys' to set your mind at rest."

That was a year and 2 months after my order.

Rob Schwarz responded to 'sordid's thread and I put him on to your two. Let's see if he picks it up.

There's an acknowledgement. If they failed to do so, and make provision for same when she announced her retirement, I'd say you have an issue. Let's see what Rob can come up with.

first, that's not the quote guide nor the FCS floor traveler, just a specs sheet from your dealer.

and yes, exactly, "option text", that's where you write details/requests you have in mind regarding the options you choose, but the actual name of the option in the quote guide is "Handwound pickups", there is no mention of Abby anywhere.

don't get me wrong, I am not trying to say you aren't right to be pissed here. I am just saying, the Custom Shop probably won't see it like you do, and when placing an order with a Master Builder with a massive wait list, you have to take the risk factor into account. what if she had passed away? would you still be asking for Abby's?
I am sure this is happening to dozens of customers who are getting their Cruz or Krause guitar just now and hoped to get Abby pickups, but unfortunately they won't.

what can they do at this point? did you ask for a Custom 60's and two Fat 50's? because that's what inside my Fessler Strat that's still at the Shop, so maybe they can remove them and put them aside for your guitar ;)

I think you're both right. The option you have circled is a text field where you can enter whatever you want, it's not an option that Fender gives you. As such, you could have written "blessed by a monk" or anything else, reasonable or unreasonable.

But once you've stated your order, Fender needs to let the customer know in a timely manner whether they can fulfill the order, and after this, again in a timely manner inform the customer when there are problems preventing the order from being filled, and give the customer options.

If they cannot do this, they have no business accepting the order.

:!: Sorry don't understand why I would want bits from your order. What does that have to with this post?

The option is what the Custom Shop typed in- not me and then sent the document to me.
