When ordering a lefty guitar with say 1965 CS strat pickups or 60's CS strat pickups, Im assuming that they wind these for a lefty guitar correct? Or is it possible they just use their standard stock righty CS pickups and just flip them?

thank you

I can't answer specifically regarding 60s Pups but the guitars I have with Lace or Vintage Noiseless have righty versions. Easier to spot due to the logos.

I don't see why it would be nec. to build a different pickup for a left handed instrument?
They would just be installed as normal. A pickup doesn't know if it is in a left or right-handed instrument.

That's true if you are talking about pickups that don't have staggered pole pieces.

If you are talking about pickups that have staggered pole pieces, you need to reverse the stagger pattern on LH pickups.

How and why would that be necessary?
If I play a right handed guitar- My High e string is near the floor.
If I play a left-handed guitar- The same is true.

Where is there a need to reverse anything? Fender just installs the bridge pickup on the right side of the pickguard in one model and the left side on the other.
Otherwise when you bought replacement pickup sets- they would have to be left or right handed. That is obviously not required in regular pickups and its not required in Custom shop pickups.

I think you are over thinking left and right handed guitars and what is required to build each.

I own a 1971 left handed Strat. The lefty pickups are different from righty pickups.

Interesting. What would Jimi say?? BTW: My tech, who has been around the block both as a journeyman musician, tech, and luthier, prefers flat pole pieces.

My bad- I was thinking of bass pickups. They just drop in a left-handed instrument.

I can see why for Stratocasters, since the pole pieces are staggered and the pickup leads come off the center of one side of the pickup, that you would want a left-handed version.

I guess the same is true for Telecasters and a lot of other Fender guitars.

It was just another little thing contributing to his mojo. Playing a right-handed guitar lefty gave him reversed stagger in his pole pieces and the reverse angle of the bridge pickup.

I can't say I ever really noticed the sonic differences between flat and staggered. So I have no preference.

I play through Marshalls, the pickups all sound great. I'd probably have to do a frequency analysis to "see" the difference.
