Hi all!

I am getting my first CS Strat and I have it narrowed down to a sunburst with 60s specs and now I am torn between the Abby HW 60s or the Cruz MD Pus.

As I understand it, the 60s would probably be lower output and Heavy Formvar wire.
But I don't know much about the other PUs.

Can users and maybe the CS chime in and help me decide?

Thanks!

I tried the Abby HW 60s and they sounded fantastic certainly a step above the CS69s in the strat I ended up going with.

I've not tried the Cruz Masterdesigns but I am sure that they wouldn't disappoint.

Its worth rembering that as Abby has now retired once the current stock have gone there will be no more.

On a related note, I understand that pups with only AY and not abby are machine wound. Is there any value tone wise or collectability wise to the machine wounds?

I've seen some 1999ish strat pups on eBay and have been interested. Worth the cash?

Hey sfscott in answer to your question most CS69s did have AY on them .... More did than did not so they are not that rare or special. I have also seen a few in 66 time machines as well which is a little less common. Initialled just means made under supervision so not that collectible at this point in time. Hope that helps :D

Thanks J_J

Based on your comment, paying two bills for a used set of Abby-initialed pups for a strat doesn't seem worth it.

Can't compare the sound, but they'd be replacing the standard Eric Johnson ones that came in the guitar.

Where do the Texas specials from the custom shop fit in to the spectrum? Been thinking about whether to swap those for some Bare Knuckle Brown Sugars in my Tele.

Guys, with all due respect:

Of course Abby is a brand of her own. But let's not play the game of any audible difference that would hold any blind test.

Cheers

David

Yep I'm not arguing with you there Amerigo.
Unless you had the same guitar inter changed the pickups with the same setup etc recorded and then asked a listener to identify which were which and the results were consistent then just then maybe could could draw a solid conclusion as per handwound vs machine wound all else in the pickup being equal i.e wire gauge, magnets etc.
A lot of the sound comes from the individuals playing style but a great guitar does help of course! :D

Awww shucks, David, you and Bill have just pulled the plug on Santa Claus :!: :!:

All kidding aside, if 'thereverend' likes the guitar's looks, feel, playability, and tone, that's what counts. Lawrence's comments to the contrary, perhaps our mythology about AY lends itself more to the level of care and attention we felt the pickup's assembly was getting. I doubt that John Cruz is sitting at the bench winding pickups. We should be talking more about the actual differences in structural specifications and materials, not just 'k's. I've read very little if not none of that in all of the past discussions about pickups on the Forums. It's all been about how it sounds to someone's ear.

To be honest and remembering these are strat pickups I would stick with the Knuckles save the hassle and buy yourself a pedal.
The Specials are described as hot . A lot of guys set the specials low.
If you have an itch for pickups though you can often purchase one on the bay slap it in and then see what you think!
You will find as many differing opinions on pickups as you will find posters.
If you are after a typical strat sound for a good price the 57/62 have that real fender quack in pos 2 and 4.
Hope this helps and apologies to the original poster for hijacking the thread! :D
