I recently picked up a 2010 custom shop 59 heavy relic strat. This thing plays like a dream. I can feel every note make its way through the body and vibrate against my chest. It's incredible. That being said, I'm curious about having it refinished in arctic white + nitro. Will the dings left by the fake relicing have to be filled in? And would this effect the sound? Any difference in sustain/resonance? will it effect the way the body vibrates with every note? how much will it devalue the guitar? how much would it cost to be done well?

I'd prefer to have it done locally. Also, how long is the process when done by a professional? I'm not in a position to go a month without playing it.
Thanks

The folks at home would certainly need to know where yours is before anyone in the position to guide you appropriately could respond. There are also serious environmental controls on the use of nitrocelluose spray.

I found a guy in Hamilton who 12th fret recommended. I called and he gave me. Good quote but said he's backed up for a month. Do you guys have experience with this situation? Could it possible effect the current playability/tone of my strat? It's a heavy relic so he will need to fill in a few spots. Again, is this a stupid decision?
Thanks so much

I'd leave well enough alone. It certainly took time and patience to create the guitar in its present form. The last time I sought to change a guitar's appearance because it had a couple of dings in it was in '69 when I sent my '58 Strat to CBS-Fender to be refinished. Instead of refinishing the guitar, they replaced the body. You want a white guitar in nitro, keep your eye websites like Pro Guitar Shop or Wildwood Guitars,[which presently is offering a non-relic nitro finish '57 Strat in it's '10' series] or drop into a Long and McQuade and see what they can do for you. Relics are all the rage lately. For the life of me I can't see them, but different strokes I suppose.

This is a joke, right?

Assume otherwise.

I think, in all honesty, it is not a practical thing to re-finish the guitar. Yes, it could be done, but it would take a while to do, would not be cost effective...and there is a slight possibility that it could change a great sounding and playing guitar.

If you just wanted to change to a NOS type finish, it might be easier to strip the existing finish and start again, but the body would look new with everything else relic'd. If you wanted to finish over the sunburst, and then create a relic'd look, I would think the dings and scrapes in the original body would need filling, otherwise you'll just get a poor finish.

And then it has to be relic'd again...all of which takes time, and certainly much longer than a month, if you want the job to be done well.

Why would you refinish a Fender Custom shop guitar? You will drastically reduce the resale value if you do this. Just sell the guitar and buy another one or buy another body in the colour you like.
