I've seen some wild things coming at the CS, but is there guitar idea that they won't do? I've heard that they don't like to replicate specs of tribute guitars, but I'm unsure if there's truth to that or not.

For instance, if I want a NOS version of the Rory Gallagher guitar or the SRV Tribute guitar, or even just the neck off of the SRV Tribute but a totally different guitar, etc... - is that uncharted territory of a CS ordered Strat? Has anyone had experiences with the CS not honoring customer's requests for certain specifications on a guitar?

The CS will not reproduce most specs on artist signature guitars. i.e. if you said can you build me a guitar with the neck just like stevie ray vaughan, or i want my guitar relic'd just like the brownie guitar. that they wont do.

The CS will not reproduce a One-Off ordered by one of his Customers nor will they reproduce a signature Strat of an Artist whose contract with FCS has ended.

If your Eric Clapton or Jeff Beck they will do anything and probably for free.
They will have english tea and cookies ready.

They won't refinish or replace bodies or necks. They might, for example, do a Signature Artist's series guitar in a finish other than the one's authorized and NOT put the artist's signature on it. The only way to find out, is to submit an order and see what the response it. With MSRP pricing going in the direction it seems to be, the juice might not be worth the squeeze any longer for any custom order.

The only thing I had refused was my request for a Super Glue neck finish, like they used on some of the 80s / 90s artist necks. Refused on the grounds that it's pure evil, or words to that effect

I meant to write 'pure evil to work with' but cut myself short. That's rushing for you!
Anyway, apparently the super-glue finish is quite awful to do. Toxic fumes and gas and sparks and lightning! (may be a slight exaggeration) :D

My guess is that there's more things they won't do than will.

Could I have a 5-string 12-fret with tone and volume dial on the edge, and no horn? Doubtful.

Obscene designs is probably another no. The Playboy one is rather tame, as guitars go.

They probably wouldn't make this either (for good reasons):

The earlier editions of those came with a canister of Zyklon B just in case the purchaser was so disastisfied that he/she felt they could kill themselves for acquiring such a guitar. Said practice was found to be in violation of regulations involving the transportation of hazardous materials. Hence, it was no longer referred to as a 'cyanocaster'.
