I have a chance to get my hands on a 2011 Eric Clapton custom shop Fender Strat. I have some concerns about it and was hoping someone on this forum will be able to help me out...

The neck has the custom shop emblem on the back with Clapton's signature and "BLACKIE" stamped. Also has same serial number as the one on the certificate of authenticity.

The body is a flat black (instead of the glossy black finish) with the Corona California neck plate rather than the custom shop :? . It has noiseless pickups, comes with a regular black fender case, and certificate of authenticity. It looks like a real Clapton neck put on a different body. Were there any flat black custom shop Clapton guitars made? I won't be able to take it apart to check out the body unless I buy it.

I attached a copy of the certificate of authenticity, does it look real?

What's a good price to pay for it if it's a Franken-strat (Clapton neck, USA standard body) 8/10 condition? What would you value a used custom shop Clapton neck? Also, are there any fake custom shop Clapton guitars?

Thank you!

Hi the certificate looks very wrong to me, the logos are stretched out of shape and it doesn't look like the certificates that I have seen.

I also thought that Clapton strats had bent steel saddles and the guitar in the photo appears to have cast saddles.

I am sure someone who knows Clapton strats better than me could help you more, but I would steer well clear of that one.

Hello, I don't know much about them apart from it should only have a single layer scratch plate, a vintage style bridge and according to the custom shop page the case should be a Tweed Case. Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for the info. I do not believe the body is original. I wish I could have taken some pictures of the neck, but the neck looks good to me. The certificate looks similar to ones I've seen, I was browsing eBay and they look pretty close. If anyone else who owns one, or knows more info could chime in that would be great! Thanks again!

That's what I'm thinking. Does the certificate look real though? I haven't seen another certificate with the top "What's hot from the custom shop." The more I'm looking at it, the more I'm not sure. What would this be worth? I don't want to overpay :? .
Thank you!

Hi,

The certificate doesn't look right to me. It looks like someone has scanned one and dragged it out fit on an A4 piece of paper as the logos and Mike's signature look distorted.

They are not A4 they are considerably smaller

Here's a photo of the certificate for my Strat, see what you think.

Ya the certificate definitely looks off. The neck looks real to me though :? . I wonder if the previous owner may have tried to recreate the COA after losing his or something. I'm hoping they'll let me take the guitar apart before buying it. I'll try to take a few pictures of the neck and post them later if the shop lets me.
Thanks!

Don't forget that it could be a fake.

Anything custom shop and desirable is being faked somewhere.

And if you are faking a guitar its not that hard to scan in a CofA and fake that as well.

I would steer well clear of this one as we have already been able to point out quite a few things that are wrong with this one.

The CofA is wrong
It has the wrong case
The paint is wrong
The bridge is wrong
The scratchplate is wrong

Be very careful before handing over money for this and if you can post pictures of the following

Front of the guitar
Headstock
Back of the guitar
Neck end
Neck pocket
Wiring

It's worthless. It's a partscaster posing as a Clapton stratocaster. If the body is incorrect along with the bridge and the COA and the case then it would be (IMHO) worthless. How much is the seller asking for it and what are you willing to pay for it ? Is that a $2499.99 price sticker on it ?

Thanks for the advice! If they don't let me take it apart in the store, I'll see what their return policy is like and just take it apart at home. I'll be sure to upload pictures of everything. I am definitely skeptical, so I will only buy it if I am able to return it or take it apart at the store/take pictures. I will let you guys know what my findings are.
Thanks!

They're asking less. The $2499.99 was a retail price tag. I wouldn't say it's worthless, but definitely worth less than a stock CS Clapton. if the neck is a real custom shop Clapton neck, and if the body is at least a MIA body, then the guitar would hold some value. I'm guessing about $1200 would be fair if everything is real. What do you guys think? I am wary of the deal given the fake COA though.
Thanks!

Well the guys working were kind enough to take off the neck at the shop. There were absolutely no marks on the body and neck pocket. Definitely seems like a fake. Sorry i couldnt take any pictures. Thanks for all the advice I think I'm going to have to stray away from this one.

Terrible fake. not even worth buying. NOT a real Fender. The Body is NOT a USA body. I WOULD NOT BUY THIS.
