Hello. I have a 50th Anniversary Masterbuilt 54 Stratocaster and I noticed that the Buddy Holly Tribute Strat has the same style tall boy Knobs and switch tip and serial number on the back trem cover as my guitar. If I am right, please correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that the tall boy knobs and switch tip and serial number on rear trem cover was only on early to mid 1954 Stratocaster's and by late 1954 they had changed the style of knobs and the serial numbers were now stamped into the neck plate. Sorry if this has been asked before.
I think the fact that Fender Custom Shop has been able to recreate this guitar from photos is fantastic and if I had the money and could find one I would have one. Seeing a photo of Buddy Holly with that 55 Strat is what made me want a Stratocaster and I am now lucky enough to have one.
I am asking this question not to say that the guitar is incorrect, I am just a bit confused by these features on the 55 Tribute Strat. Thank you.

In that the guitar was reproduced from early photographs taken of Buddy as you note, it may account for that which you refer to. Hard to know how much of the parts bin were carried over in those years. Fender's been known to do that. In consideration of this project, discussed here often across several years in the past, I anticipated they would repro the guitar in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But such was not the case.

Thank you for the reply, yes that makes sense. It got me thinking though that as Buddy Hollys guitar was stolen and there is no way to check the body or neck date, it's not an impossibility that his guitar could have been a 1954 Stratocaster and Buddy Holly bought it in 1955. Again just a probability, but I have heard of Fender carrying parts like in 1957 when the Stratocaster's had a mixture of ABS pickup covers and Bakelite Knobs. (I use the word Bakelite because I can't remember the proper name of the material used to make the early knobs).

Thank you

Leo Baekeland formulated the first synthetic resin material sometime during the first decade of the 20th century. It was a phenol-formaldehyde compound which he named 'Bakelite' the product name for which it is best known. It's chemical name has no relevance for our purposes. Thus, you were quite correct in your choice.

It wasn't Bakelite. The plastic parts on early Strats were polystyrene.

Bakelite is made with a brown phenolic resin and can only be dark colors. Black, brown, very dark red, blue, and green. There's no white or yellow Bakelite. (There's a later phenolic plastic called "Catalin" which is similar but was available in light/bright colors - it's often mistaken for Bakelite.)

Thank you both for your replys. I have heard before that they were made of polystyrene and that was the name I was trying to remember. I believe though that people more than often refer to these early parts as Bakelite.
I remember seeing a picture of Buddy Holly with his Strat from when he was over here in England, I thought to myself what's going on with those pickup covers, how are they like that. That's when I first found out of this material they were made with. I thought It was just plastic.
Apparently this material is used on my 50th anniversary 54 Strat, though the covers haven't worn through the cover seems to have lost its top layer on the edges.
Again thanks for replying.

You're dead to rights and quite welcome. Too bad you missed the last six years. We've had some really knock down and drag out conversations, some incredibile DIY projects, along with a lot of learning about people, places, and things. The talent pool herein is immense in a lot of ways.

I look forwards to many more conversations :) Whats your view on the Tribute models they do? I think they are fantastic, the only problem I would have is I play the guitars and not collect them as my Strat shows with a few wear marks on the neck.
