I'm looking into ordering a Custom Shop Strat. I recently played a Relic Strat with a set of Custom Shop '69 pickups. I loved the neck pickup. It produced gave some great Hendrix tones. However, I found that the bridge didn't have enough ooomph! for my tastes.

I'm thinking about going for a set as follows:

NECK: '69
MIDDLE: Fat 50s
BRIDGE: Texas Special

Does this sound like it will work?

Has anyone got any other recommendations?

Hey Johnny,

Your concept is the exact same pickup configuration that CS used on the Limited Edition Fender '57 Stratocaster Heavy Relic.

I bought one of these in 2008 (my niece has it now as a gift). It's a great guitar.

The body is lightweight ash and the neck is 1-piece quartersawn maple, which have some effects on tone.

One of the things I like best about this guitar is that the bridge pickup is very strong.

Best of luck with your Strat!

Paul

Thanks for the reply, Paul. Did you find that set was well-balanced in terms of output levels?

It has been a while since I played that Strat. However, my recollection is that those pickups worked well in that guitar. But the bridge pickup did stand out somewhat for its strong signal.

In a typical set of CS '60s or CS Fat '50s, the bridge pickup (at least on the Strats I own) is kind of the weak link. They balance well versus the middle and neck pickups, but are maybe a hair thin sounding. Tastes vary, so just my own experience.

Nothing thin about that '57 LTD. The bridge pickup really had a lot of vintage sounding punch to it. But again, that's on a Strat with a 1-piece maple neck and an ash body.

Bottom line on this guitar, the CS Texas Special bridge pickup did stand out versus the middle and neck pickups. But it sounded really good.
