Hi - can someone give me the lowdown/history on Fender Custom Shop hardcases?

I always thought that the case for a custom shop instrument should always have the Fender Custom Shop logo inside, is that right? Or are some plain inside? Have they always made by G & G and re-badged (on the outside, Fender?)

One more question, does the guitar have the same serial no. as the case? Or does the case not have a matching number? When it comes to re-selling, does it matter if you sell it with the original case, or are buyers not bothered about that?

Thanks, and apols for noobie questions!

Hi there ... not all custom shop G and G cases have the Custom Shop logo.
Generally the period correct guitars e.g time machines have a case similar to the period and no Custom Shop logo.
Some newer ones have the logo and other embroidered lettering e.g. Limited edtion etc.
I have not seen cases with serial numbers so I am not sure what you mean.
A collector would want the correct case with the correct guitar so it may influence the value.
Hope this all helps.
I'm sure someone will chime in with a link for more info re the history of cases:D

My FCS Jazz came with a plain G&G case. No embroidered logo inside and no Fender badge on the outside. The same case you can find on any online music store for aound $159.00. So I was a little disapointed when I received mine. I guess I was expecting too much, but I thought after paying for a top end bass that it would come in a better case. I much prefer the molded case my Am Stnd P V came in. I believe they're made by SKB.
The tolex casses aren't very good when it comes to travel. I play in an average weekend band and I always put my case in the back seak of my truck....usually with no other equipment. It didn't take long for the case to start showing wear.
It actually got busted up in shipping when the Custom Shop sent it back to me after I had sent the bass to them for repair. The "G" string tunning key broke off when they shipped it back without repairing the original damage I sent it to them for (neck binding is delaminating in less than a year of ownership - they called it normal wear and tear). It also caused a couple of cosmetic issues. They sent me a new tuner key and then I shipped it back to them in the busted case again (as per their instrutions) for them to repair the damage caused in shipping. The "G" & "B" string tuners were broke when they received the bass. They returned the bass to me in the damaged case after fixing the cosmetic issues.....without the 2 tuning keys installed on the bass. They were in their original packaging along with a set of strings in the storage compartment.
They did send me a new G&G tolex case, but I have since purchased a Gator GPE case and it has held up very well. I only paid $129.00 for it (on sale - normally $139.99).

I just think if you are going to buy a CS instrument, the case it is going to be stored in - and carried about in - should be special too. This is the whole point of my thread. It should be stronger and better built than the run-of-the-mill guitar case, and beautiful too. Should be part of the whole Custom Shop experience imo.

Sad to hear that unless you buy a Limited Edition model, not even the CS logo is in the cases.

I like mine- the very nice G&G case that came with my 2013 Closet Classic Precision Pro has the Limited Edition FCS logo embroidered inside.

A HSC is a better alternative than a gigbag, although some of the better gigbags are way up thre in terms of quality and protection:

I was lucky to find the Bass Guitar Model; no longer made.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with even a plain FCS case, G&G is the Industry Standard.

Some FCS instruments come in Vintage Tweed cases, and some Fender series are using very nice cream tolex cases.

Hi Lefty
You may have misunderstood me when i said not all custom shop cases have the logo.
Some std shop cases do have a logo but some do not.
I do agree though that a decent std case may protect your guitar and fit in tighter places more than some of the fancy ones. :D

What I have been lobbying for years with respect to the Custom Shop cases is that they should at least be equal to the design used by PRS in their basic form which is form fitted and plush lined. I can't speak to raw materials, but the fit and finish of the cases of the PRS guitars I have owned bury anything Fender has ever supplied me in a Custom Shop case including the case for my Gilmour.

Besides the molded SKB-type TSA cases, Fender has had a very long relationship with G&G case company; their (G&G) basic tolex model is used by any number of high-end builders besides FCS, differing in outer coverings.
I have some REAL nice versions that came with some of my other instruments (Bass Guitars) inc. textured croc for a VERY LE EBMM Bongo (Mahogany; 1 of 2 built) and an awesome grey rough tolex covering for my Stevens Slant 4- Y'all do know who Michael Stevens is, right?? Let's hope!
So although a PRS or similar form-fitted case may "bury' a FCS G&G; doubtful-given the relationship Fender has had with that supplier- there would be a change. And if there were it would simply add more $$$ to the instrument (Not a consideration if you're gonna go FCS!

Feel free to order a custom case if you want; there's some awesome case mfrs. out there.
I looked into a high-tech super-lightweight carbon-fiber ATA case for one of my instruments:
It was THE business, and it cost like it was too!
Wasn't quite ready to shell out that kind money; so
do what you wanna do, and have your Credit Card ready too!

G&G will build the equivalent case for me that PRS supplies stock with its MIA line of guitars. That the Fender Custom Shop is price point parallel to what PRS sells its production line guitars for, asking for a same quality case is not beyond reason. I had a Teambuilt Strat done about 8 years ago and the case it was sent in was the same type of tweed case my '57 VHR was supplied with. If I'm paying $4-$5K US for a guitar, it shouldn't be housed in the same case a $1500 instrument comes in.
